Job Summary:

The Division of Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M) is a full-spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of the UW-Madison campus in support of the university's education, research, and outreach activities. FP&M works behind the scenes to coordinate campus planning, manage design and construction, maintain and operate buildings and grounds, supply utility services, ensure health and safety, and provide parking and transportation services.

The Registered Architect is responsible for acting as a design team lead on multiple remodeling projects for construction by in-house trades. This position works side-by-side with construction experts and with a multitude of building, construction, and space types. This position works with internal and external stakeholders and vendors to provide engineering guidance and recommendations to ensure our campus is meeting regulatory and professional engineering standards.


Provides professional, licensed, and credentialed architectural expertise in designing, modifying and constructing institution facilities, including buildings and physical plant infrastructure to meet regulatory and professional architectural standards.
  • 30% Assesses, designs, modifies, and constructs institution facilities utilizing architectural techniques and best practices
  • 20% Monitors, interprets, communicates, and applies all established building codes, policies, and procedures
  • 20% Liaises facility construction plans with internal and external stakeholders and vendors, and provides architectural guidance and recommendations to align with strategic facility planning
  • 10% Serves as a professional, licensed, and credentialed subject matter expert to unit leadership regarding architectural technology, design, methodology, and execution for varying facilities projects
  • 5% Performs cost estimating on a per-element, -assembly and/or -square foot basis utilizing conventional estimating tools
  • 5% Seeks opportunities to incorporate sustainability into design work
  • 5% Acts as design team lead on a per-project basis to ensure project delivery is coordinated, budget-sensitive, timely and customer-focused
  • 5% Performs space utilization studies, system compliance evaluations, and condition inventories for customers when requested

Fulfills all requirements as an Architect as outlined by the State of Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services:


- Work experience with building occupancy types: office, institutional, education, laboratory, hospitality, theater, storage, factory, or residential
- Minimum of five years
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

- Knowledge of building system HVAC design
- Work experience in laboratory design
- Experience with remodeling construction projects
- Experience with Revit
