Job Summary

Reporting to the Coordinator of Student Accessibility Resources. The Interpreter is responsible for facilitating communications between hearing and Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals in classrooms and meetings using American Sign Language or the mode of communication preferred by the student.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Performance Requirements*
  • Provides sign language interpreter services to students
  • Creates interpreter schedules to cover all students’ classes requiring their services including part-time staff and interpreters from an agency
  • Interprets or transliterates information using American Sign Language, or the mode of communication preferred by the student
  • Works in collaboration with the Coordinator of Student Accessibility Resources to determine services needed, and coordinates services for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing
  • Acts as a liaison between students, faculty, staff, and community resources the access to communication
  • Coordinates Student Accessibility Resources ( SAR ) sponsored workshops and materials related to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community
Service Excellence
  • Participates on behalf of the College in external community organizations and associations as assigned to support the essential performance requirements
  • Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually, and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite
  • Completes all required training and professional development sessions sponsored through the Tarrant County College ( TCC ) Institute
  • Supports the values of the College: diversity, teaching excellence, student success, innovation, and creativity and service to the College
  • Supports the mission, values and 3 goals and 8 principles of the College
Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the Coordinator of Student Accessibility Resources

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree of 60 college hours
  • Current State Board for Evaluation of Interpreters ( BEI ) or National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf ( RID ) Certification
  • Two (2) years of working experience related to the Essential Performance Requirements
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a higher-education environment
  • BEI Advanced Certification
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Skilled in excellent customer service and interpersonal skills with diverse populations
  • Skilled using applications and enterprise systems, including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment and a setting that is diverse and urban
  • Ability to think critically to effectively solve and communicate problems in a fast-paced environment where the demands for work are varied, and unpredictable in scope and volume
  • Ability to analyze data and provide sound recommendations based on policy, procedure, practice, and existing regulations
  • Ability to hear, identify, and understand the speech of another person without relying on visual assistance as well as speak clearly so that the speech is understandable to a listener
  • Ability to see details of another person’s hand shapes, hand movements, and facial expressions from a distance of three to six feet
  • Ability to control the muscles of the face in order to manipulate the eyebrows, cheeks, mouth, and nose
  • Ability to quickly make coordinated movements of one hand, a hand together with its arm, two hands, or two hands together with arms
  • Ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the arms, fingers, hands, and wrists
  • Ability to move the arms to place the hands slightly above the head, and to extend the arms away from the front of the body and to the sides of the body
  • Ability to coordinate movements of both arms while sitting or standing
  • Ability to control the head in order to nod and to turn it from side to side
  • Ability to endure moderate physical exertion, exhibiting physical endurance for at least 30 minutes
