The University of Charleston in Charleston, West Virginia seeks an Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Provost, and Dean of Faculty to join our growing and innovative university.

The Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs (EVP), Provost, and Dean of Faculty (the Provost) is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the university's academic programs, supporting an effective teaching and learning environment for traditional and non-traditional students in seated, on-line, and hybrid environments, overseeing state and federal grant writing and performance, and providing leadership for the Deans and the following administrative units: academic services, career services, institutional and student effectiveness, and library services. All members of the faculty (full and part-time) indirectly report to the Provost. The Provost and the EVPs of Finance and Enrollment Management are members of the President's Cabinet which includes the Vice Presidents of Student Life, Development, Communications and Marketing, and Athletics. The Provost reports to the President and serves as the academic liaison with the Board of Trustees through the Quality Committee.

The University of Charleston (UC) is a dynamic private institution with a learner-centric, outcomes-focused philosophy and a dedicated emphasis on innovation and professional programs. UC is a diverse and evolving institution located in Charleston, WV, the state capital, with an additional campus in Beckley, WV and multiple online programs. There are 3,000 students enrolled in a variety of associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral degree programs through campus-based and distance education. UC has a Carnegie Classification as a doctoral/professional university and offers its degrees and certificates through the Schools of Arts and Sciences, Business and Leadership, Health Sciences, and Pharmacy as well as through the Division of Continuing and Professional Education. The university sponsors 19 intercollegiate sports and recruits diverse students from over 40 states and 40 countries.

Roles and Responsibilities

Essential roles and responsibilities of the Provost include:

o Implementing the strategic academic vision
o Fostering intellectual growth, student learning, and scholarly and creative activities
o Leading efforts to recruit, retain, and support faculty and academic support staff
o Demonstrating sound fiscal management and empirical-based decision-making in overseeing program development, budgets, and resource allocation for all academic and academic support units.
o Ensuring an active and expanding dialogue with external constituencies
o Contributing to the overall success of the University's values, vision, mission, goals, and strategic priorities

Experience & Qualifications

The following are required of the successful candidate:
o Terminal academic degree
o Record of progressively responsible academic administrative experience in higher education; this includes experience as an academic dean, chair, and/or significant academic administrative experience in an environment that supports both undergraduate and graduate programs and a variety of learning modalities
o Demonstrated experience with program-level accreditation processes and with institutional-level accreditation requirements/processes especially HLC and specialized accrediting bodies in the health sciences and business
o Demonstrated commitment to inclusive and collaborative leadership with a passion for serving traditional and non-traditional undergraduate, graduate, and professional development students.
o Experience addressing the needs of diverse students including adult learners, student athletes, students from underrepresented groups, and first-generation, low income, and international students
o Ability to communicate complex data to audiences with varying degrees of knowledge including the Board of Trustees and external partners
Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate many of the following skills, experiences, and attributes:

o Demonstrated planning, organizational, and proactive problem-solving skills independently and in teams across traditional and entrepreneurial environments.
o Ability to respond quickly, collaboratively, and decisively to new opportunities and challenges
o Demonstrated record of using data and technology to make decisions
o Demonstrated experience with assessment and assurance of learning in undergraduate, graduate, and professional development programs
o Demonstrated experience fostering growth of campus-based and online programs through cross-functional collaboration to meet the distinctive needs of traditional and adult learners
o Demonstrated experience and understanding of the unique circumstances associated with military students in recruitment, enrollment, and retention.
o Experience in developing and maintaining equitable and inclusive learning and work environments
o Experience managing budgets, personnel, and strategic planning processes
o Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
o Ability to lead individuals and teams around vision, mission, values, and strategic priorities
o Ability to inspire faculty engagement and shared governance
o Ability to effectively establish and achieve goals and objectives and develop and maintain effective organizational structures and operations
o Knowledge of best practices in the administration of academic affairs
o Excellent organizational and time management skills with proven attention to detail, ability to establish priorities, and meet deadlines
o Personal integrity, professionalism, and sincere regard for academic integrity, academic freedom, and intellectual property.
o Ability to maintain confidentiality
o Successful federal and state grant applications and management
o Distinguished record of teaching, scholarship, and service appropriate for an appointment at the rank of professor
o Knowledge and experience with Ellucian Colleague preferred
