Job Description

The Coordinator position will be responsible for working collaboratively with the Virginia Family Nutrition Program (FNP) and Virginia Department of Social Services (DSS) Tribal Liaison in strategically visioning, developing, and overseeing the execution of strategic nutrition initiatives to improve eating patterns, increase access to nutritious foods, and advance health within indigenous communities of Virginia. Overall responsibilities include: creating and sustaining relationships with the DSS Tribal Liaisons and federally- and state-recognized tribes within Virginia; coordinating and facilitating the delivery of SNAP-Ed programs and initiatives that honor the traditions and beliefs of indigenous people and advance health; hiring and supervising program staff to teach nutrition and encourage physical activity; and communicating with on- and off-campus FNP team members on a regular basis.

Part-time telework is possible, with travel to Blacksburg, conference locations, and other program sites as needed. The successful applicant will be housed in New Kent, Essex, or King William Virginia Cooperative Extension office (depending on the candidate’s preference).

Required Qualifications

• A master’s degree in public health, food studies, nutrition or related field
• Demonstrated capacity to build and sustain community-driven programs and collaborative relationships with culturally diverse, under-served audiences
• Strong group facilitation skills
• Experience in demonstrating cultural humility
• Strong self-initiative, visioning, and organizational skills, including project management skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in or with indigenous communities
• Supervisory experience
