Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU) invites applications and nominations for the position of Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

A nationally ranked public research university and regional economic catalyst, SIU creates and exchanges knowledge to shape future leaders, improve communities, and transform lives. With over 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the University's six colleges and three professional schools offer more than 200 undergraduate majors, minors and specializations; three associate degrees; and graduate and professional education featuring 69 master's degrees and 35 doctoral, medical and law degree programs. Since its founding, the University has awarded nearly 300,000 degrees and has about 250,000 living alumni throughout the world.

Diversity is an integral part of SIU's legacy, and the University is committed to providing a welcoming environment and the highest possible quality of education that will prepare all its students to become productive citizens in a multicultural world. SIU is known for its support of students with disabilities, military veterans, and those who are the first in their families to attend college. SIU has earned national recognition from Strive for College for excellence in service to traditionally underserved students. The University, home of the First Saluki Center serving first-generation students, was named a Strive College Partner for 2020, the inaugural year of the program.

Reporting to Chancellor Austin A. Lane, the provost will join SIU at a pivotal moment as the University looks forward with optimism and is catalyzed by the priorities outlined in its ambitious strategic plan Imagine 2030. To partner with the Chancellor, the deans, the faculty, staff and constituencies, the provost will assume a highly impactful and influential role, and nearly every aspect of SIU's new plan will require support, coordination, and leadership from academic affairs. SIU is solidifying its commitment to student engagement and success; extending its research mission; building its brand and partnerships; growing its commitment to sustainability; and reinforcing a longstanding dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In close partnership with senior leadership, faculty, staff, and students, the provost will establish and enact a vision for academic affairs that builds upon the strengths and history of this venerable, nationally-recognized institution and creates a compelling, contemporary plan for the future.

The new leader will be collaborative, strategic, innovative, visionary, and committed to transparency and trust building in decision making and communication. The successful candidate will possess an earned doctorate or a terminal degree within their academic/professional discipline and be appointable at the rank of full professor with tenure. They will possess a distinguished record of teaching, scholarship, research/creative activity, and service; a proven record of successful leadership in an academic administrative position; strong problem solving, decision-making, and communication skills; experience with academic planning and resource allocation; demonstrated commitment to affirmative action, the promotion of diversity, and shared governance.
