The Assistant Director of Multicultural Student Services is a full-time staff position in the Student Success Center. The center’s mission is to aid all students in their transition to college life and to help them achieve individual academic success culminating in graduation. This role will collaborate with the Academic Departments, the Office of the Commandant, Cadet Activities, Financial Aid and Scholarships and the Office of Admissions.

The Assistant Director of Multicultural Student Services will oversee success initiatives for students of underrepresented populations and provide diversity education/training and programming for The Citadel community. The role also includes academic advising and mentoring students of diverse populations.

Essential functions
  • Monitor the academic progress and provide additional academic advising for underrepresented student populations.
  • Provide individual support to students in their social, leadership, and identity development and provide advocacy and support with the Commandant of Cadets for individuals and student groups including advising and referral, as appropriate, on bias incidents and issues of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Assist with the diversity training for the Corps of Cadets by developing training modules, work with the Office of the Commandant to coordinate the delivery of the modules and, to the extent possible, deliver the modules.
  • Develop and manage MSS’s overall assessment strategy to evaluate programs and services sponsored by the office. Assure that services are aligned with The Citadel’s overall strategic plan and diversity, equity and inclusion goals.
  • Lead the planning and administration of the college’s annual Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. Assist with the planning and coordination of the other cultural history/heritage month-long celebrations.
  • Provide support and outreach to cultural affinity and identity-based student organizations
  • Serve as a member of the colleges Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion council.
  • Serve as the liaison to the Citadel African American Alumni Association mentoring program and point of contact for the Black History Intercollegiate Consortium
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required in College Student Development, Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, or related field and direct experience in diversity, equity and inclusion work or a related area in higher education
  • Knowledge of theories and practices for college student development and identity formation
  • Experience developing, executing and assessing programming for college students
  • Experience advocating for and supporting academic, personal and professional needs of underrepresented populations
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree preferred
