Job Details

The ACS-approved Department of Chemistry at Skidmore College invites applications from individuals, at any rank, for a tenure-stream position in organic chemistry, to begin in the Fall of 2023. Skidmore is a highly selective, nationally ranked liberal arts college located in Saratoga Springs, New York, with a student population of 2,650, 26% of whom are domestic students of color, 11% are international students, 15% are first generation students, 19% are Pell-eligible, and 16% are students with disabilities. The successful candidate will contribute to the growing diversity and excellence of the academic community through their equitable and inclusive teaching, scholarship, and service. With its relatively low student-faculty ratio (8:1), Skidmore is known for its faculty of teacher-scholars devoted to the instruction and mentoring of undergraduates. Enthusiasm for and knowledge of equitable and inclusive teaching, mentoring, and advising practices to support a diverse student population are essential.

A Ph.D. in chemistry (e.g., specialization in organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, or polymer chemistry) or a related field (e.g., chemical biology, medicinal chemistry, or materials science) is required with the expertise to teach organic chemistry. Post-doctoral experience is beneficial, although not required. The hired candidate will be expected to (1) teach an average of 18 contact hours per year (a lecture section is 3 contact hours, a lab section is 3 to 4 contact hours), primarily in our organic chemistry sequence, and occasionally upper-level courses in their area of expertise, introductory courses, an interdisciplinary first-year seminar (topic open), and/or a STEM power & justice course; (2) develop a vibrant undergraduate research program emphasizing synthetic chemistry; (3) advise and mentor students; and (4) participate in departmental and college service. Skidmore supports faculty in many ways, including competitive start-up funds, a pre-tenure research leave, internal grants for collaborative research, a new faculty learning community, funds to travel to present and for societal memberships, writing groups, and a course release in the first year. With the recent opening of the innovative Center for Integrated Sciences, the Chemistry Department is now housed entirely in modern spaces. Please visit https://www.skidmore.edu/chemistry/search/ for additional information about the position including teaching loads, available resources, the search process, and the new Center for Integrated Sciences.

We encourage applications from individuals with identities minoritized in the sciences and who have experience working with diverse student populations. Successful applicants are expected to highlight specific experiences, training, and expertise related to supporting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive educational community throughout their application materials. Review of applications will begin on September 15, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled.
