SUMMARY :

The Carthage College supervisor is both a valuable resource for and an evaluator of the student teacher. The supervisor needs to communicate and work with both the student teacher and cooperating teacher to maximize the developmental process of the student teaching experience. Close communication with the Carthage College Director of Student Teaching regarding the progress, concerns, and problems of the student teacher is essential.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS :
  • Meet with the student teacher and cooperating teacher at the beginning of each new assignment. At this meeting, supervisors introduce themselves, exchange contact information, and express desire to provide assistance as needed. The Student Teacher Handbook should be reviewed with an emphasis on the evaluation process and expectations for the student teacher. Questions and discussion are encouraged to ensure that there is a clear understanding of the student teaching experience.
  • Observe the student teacher at least two (2) times during each quarter and complete the formal Carthage College Teacher Candidate Evaluation Form. More observations/meetings may be scheduled upon the request of the student teacher, the cooperating teacher, and/or the Carthage College supervisor.
  • Meet with the student teacher and cooperating teacher for at least one of the observations to evaluate the student teacher’s progress and make recommendations where needed.
  • Be available to the cooperating teacher and the student teacher if any problems/concerns arise.
  • Talk with the cooperating teacher to get input, provide feedback, and discuss the progress of the student teacher.
  • Serve as a liaison between the cooperating school and Carthage College Director of Student Teaching.
  • Submit each completed evaluation to the Education Office via email to education@carthage.edu with a copy to the student teacher and the cooperating teacher.
  • Write a letter of reference, if requested, for the student teacher.
