Director of Instructional Technology & Design

  • As a member of the Office of the Provost the Director of Instructional Technology & Design reports to the Associate Provost and serves as the lead individual for improving instruction using technology-based tools. The Director of Instructional Technology & Design also supervises university employees, student workers, and contract employees to provide distance education, classroom, teaching and learning, and presentation technology support.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborating with faculty and staff to effectively apply instructional technologies:
    • Meet with department chairs, faculty, and administrators to assess how instructional technology in classrooms, science labs, computer labs and other instructional areas is being utilized for web-enhanced, hybrid, and completely online courses in the academic programs and for internal training.
    • Address current needs by designing and implementing a faculty development/ training curriculum consisting of workshops, one-to-one consultations, and other learning opportunities geared toward addressing a wide variety of skill levels.
    • Develop and provide training and support for students using university supported software and the LMS for course participation, assignments and collaboration.
    • Convey deep knowledge of the pedagogical reasoning and effective practices behind the choice and implementation of instructional technologies.
    • Become a trusted advisor through communicating faculty concerns and needs regarding instructional technologies to stakeholders in IT and Academics.
    • Provide recommendations for emerging technologies for teaching and learning.
    • Provide contract review for scope of work and terms for new and existing technologies.
    • Participate as a member of the university’s Instructional Technology Committee and other ad hoc groups as assigned.

  • Effectively supporting instructional technologies at the institutional level:
    • Provide administrative support of existing technology systems (including the current LMS and technology-enhanced classrooms), hardware and software tools currently used in the classrooms and labs.
    • Provide Tier III support for the delivery of all courses and organizations with a technology component for teaching, learning, training and the dissemination of resources.
    • Assist with the development and review of policies and administrative procedures as they relate to the administration and use of technology.

  • Guiding the institution in the exploration and investment of new technologies:
    • Actively serve on teams investigating technologies for possible investment or pilot, lending experienced advice on their relative benefit to faculty and students.
    • Provide contract negotiation, review scope of work and terms for the procurement of software and devices.
    • Participate in the organization, management and assessment of pilot projects.
    • Serve on the university Instructional Technology Committee to assist in developing assessment and outcomes plans.

  • Manage the Instructional Technology and Design unit
    • Provide supervisory duties, daily work and projects’ scope, performance monitoring and reviews.
    • Confer with outside vendors to provide additional work needed by negotiating contracts and scope of work.
    • Provide course and program reviews for quality.

  • Integrate the core values of respect, compassion, integrity, justice, and service in all aspects of interaction.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Travel to satellite locations as needed.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Master's degree in Education, Instructional Design, or related subject preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience with instructional design and technology.
  • 2+ years teaching either online, hybrid or web-enhanced courses at the post-secondary level.
  • Proven ability to set and achieve goals.
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills with the ability to exercise mature judgment.
  • Strong analytical, technical and writing skills.
  • Training and public speaking / presentation experience.
  • A willingness and ability to mentor staff.
  • Ability to utilize multimedia technology and authoring tools.
  • Knowledge of synchronous and asynchronous instructional strategies.
  • Proficiency with emerging technologies.
  • A solid understanding of best practices in blended and online education including learningtheory, course development, delivery models, technology tools, and quality control.
  • Experience working with a collaborative environment with a strong emphasis on building and maintaining consensus.
  • Experience with change management and the ability to form strong interpersonal working relationships.
