Job Summary

The Department of Art and Art History at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Digital Art Lab Coordinator to provide professional technical assistance regarding studio/classroom computer use. The position will be responsible for management, maintenance, organization and the day to day operation of the fields of photography, video, digital art, and sound within classrooms and labs; providing equipment, software and technical assistance for students; providing safety training to all lab users; and ordering all classroom and lab supplies and materials. The individual will also supervise all duties and responsibilities of the GPTI’s, GA’s and volunteers within the area and manage the Print Lab.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Manage the Print Lab
  • Maintain the Website.
  • Print jobs – patrons walk-in during open hours, or make on-line appointment.
  • Invoice patrons and collect fee at time of service.
  • Reconcile invoices at the end of each day and make deposits.
  • Calibrate display at the beginning of each week.
  • Advertise the Print Lab service on and off campus.
  • Use judgement regarding selection, maintenance and repair of the printers.
  • Manage budget for Print Lab.
  • Create/maintain a business strategy/plan for the Print Lab.
  • Advise patrons on file preparation for high-end, fine art printing.
Manage Labs and Darkrooms of the Interdisciplinary Media Arts Practices (IMAP) area
  • Hire graduate and undergraduate students. Schedule and approve work records and general supervision of student employees in all areas of IMAP.
  • Train and supervise duties and responsibilities of the GPTI’s, GA’s, graduate and undergraduate student monitors within IMAP.
  • Manage day-to-day operations, maintenance and organization of the IMAP area including the maintenance and organization of darkrooms, computers labs, and other specific needs related to photography, video, digital art and sound.
  • Advise and share technical and artistic expertise on processes, equipment and software with faculty, staff and students using the digital output lab, digital lab, video lab, dark rooms, and other IMAP areas.
  • Order all chemicals and photographic paper used in all the darkrooms and assist students with specific technical and software needs.
  • Keep all cameras, SLR, digital, video and sound equipment in working order as well as all the computers and peripheral equipment. Organize, develop and monitor an equipment check out system for all students; manager scheduling of the photo lighting studio.
  • Employ creative problem solving and good communication skills with IMAP faculty, staff and students.
Oversee Acquisition, Repair and Inventory of Equipment and Supplies
  • Use discretion to order, organize and inventory all items and supplies needed for all IMAP labs. Connect with faculty, staff and students on a regular basis to determine their needs each semester.
  • Research cost saving measures with vendors to provide software for labs, and other supplies.
Maintain Health and Safety of Classrooms and Studios
  • Organize and coordinate the environmental health and safety needs of the area and sign the weekly waste management sheets of EH&S.
  • Supervise the proper storage and removal of waste chemicals in the studios. Training of those who use the darkroom/studio spaces.
  • Ensure that all IMAP lab users understand all procedures with regard to a safe working environment and are properly trained.
What You Should Know

This position will work primarily on-campus, with some flexibility for remote work occasionally.

What We Require
  • 4 years of lab experience with fine art photography and digital art, including printing.
  • Colorado residency is required.
What You Will Need
  • Working knowledge of the software used in all the IMAP labs, including Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Good communication skills.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • BA degree.
  • Experience working in education.
  • Experience working in fine art photography, digital art, and printing.
