Department Summary
The University of Oregon's art museum opened its doors to the public in 1933. Designed by Ellis F. Lawrence, UO Dean of Architecture & Allied Arts at the time, the museum was built to house the Murray Warner Collection of Oriental Art—more than 3,700 works of art given to the University of Oregon by Gertrude Bass Warner.

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) at the University of Oregon is a nationally accredited art museum that upholds the highest professional standards in the museum field. In addition to maintaining collections of Asian, European and American works of art, the museum routinely presents traveling and special exhibitions, partners with community organizations on educational and cultural programs and with diverse communities to build access and inclusion. The JSMA serves as an educational resource for the university and K-12 schools throughout our state. The mission of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) is to enhance the academic mission of the University of Oregon and further the appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts for the public.
Position Summary
The Museum Facilities and Security Administrator (MFSA) is the primary on-site staff member providing day-to-day supervision for the museum's facilities and security operation. This position will schedule building operations, maintenance and repair of the JSMA and oversee a safe environment for staff, students and faculty and of the collections and displayed works of art while assuring a positive customer service experience for all visitors. The MFSA reports to the JSMA Associate Director and provides administrative and management oversight of five security officers, facilities service coordinator and custodian and 10 to 20 student gallery monitors.

The MFSA schedules, trains, and supervises staff to secure and maintain the museum and its collections as well as provides for the safety and comfort of visitors during the museum's open hours and at special events.This position provides guidance, training, and monitors the work assignments of all security staff in the JSMA. Supervision of the security staff includes establishing posts, post orders, and function of the control room. Control room supervision includes monitoring alarms and video, badging visitors, key control, dispatching, and coordination with the University of Oregon Police Department (UOPD). The MFSA takes a lead role in serving the museum's students and visitors and making them feel safe and welcome during their time in the museum.

The ideal candidate will be familiar and/or experienced with CCTV surveillance technology, security alarm systems, VEDA, and other security-related systems within the museum. This position will be familiar with proprietary systems in use and able to take the lead in reporting malfunctioning equipment and suggesting timely upgrades.

The MFSA is responsible for the security and facility budget and reports on any irregularities or changes in expectations throughout the fiscal year while spending responsibly in the yearly budget plan. The position provides input and makes recommendations for future modifications during the beginning budget planning process and works closely with the Associate Director in preparing staffing and training plans and establishing priorities in order to meet institutional goals with the most effective and economical utilization of personnel, technology, and equipment. The successful candidate must be flexible and be
able to work ALL shifts as schedules demand, including weekends, and is the designated on-call contact
for off-hours alarms or notices.

Special Requirements
  • Adult CPR with First Aid and Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) certification required within 60-days of employment.
  • This position will require a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain UO Driver's Certification. Necessary for monitoring and site visits to the JSMA's offsite storage facility.
    Minimum Requirements
  • Associate's degree or three years security experience in an AAM accredited museum security department.
  • Three years' experience working within a security program.
  • One year experience training and scheduling staff, students, and/or volunteers.
    Professional Competencies
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills with programs such as Microsoft Word and other related software applications.
  • Proven ability to effectively, continuously and discretely work with confidential and potentially sensitive information.
  • Proven ability to consistently demonstrate a high degree of personal integrity and emotional maturity.
    Preferred Qualifications
  • Supervisory or leadership experience (i.e., field trainer, team leader, unit lead, etc.) with a security program in an art museum, historic site, historic collection or artifact care program, or similar security leadership experience.
  • Practical experience and training in the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with art media, object care, and/or other related background and/or training.
