Summary:

This position serves as the Academic Coordinator or the Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services providing leadership support to staff and academic support to assigned teams.  The individual assists coaches, athletic administrators, university administrators and faculty with any and all concerns as they relate to the academic needs and overall development of the student-athletes at Miami University.  The Asst Director role only provides oversight and leadership of the office in the absence of the Director.  This position specifically supports the mission of the University and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics by assisting in institutional compliance with NCAA and Conference rules and regulations.

 

Duties/Physical Demands:

•             Provide detailed weekly and end of semester reports to SAASS staff, head coaches and sport administrators on student athlete academic performance and eligibility status

•             Provide one-on-one academic support/learning interventions

•             Educate student-athletes on registration process, financial aid, NCAA academic progress, study skills, time management, test taking and other skills that support the success of students

•             Assist the sport programs in talking with prospective student-athletes, parents, and/or guardians about the academic services provided at Miami University at recruiting visits and scheduled recruiting functions

•             Represent the Office of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services on University Committees, and communicate NCAA and MAC rules and regulations on satisfactory progress and eligibility with college academic advisors and support staff

•             Address concerns of faculty members regarding student-athlete performance

•             Assists in the office’s hiring processes as needed

•             Other duties as assigned.  (This list of essential duties, tasks and responsibilities is not all-inclusive; individual will perform other related duties as assigned.)

 

Asst Director will have these additional duties:

•             Oversees and administers the Summer Bridge program

•             Serves as the academic liaison to the NCAA Compliance Office

•             Provides leadership support to the Individualized Learning Specialist program

•             Assists academic counselors in monitoring and maintaining accurate and up-to-date continuing eligibility spreadsheets

 

Minimum Qualifications:

For consideration as an Academic Coordinator:

•           Bachelor’s degree

•           Academic advising experience or experience working directly with college students

•           Experience working and communicating with diverse groups of people

 

For consideration as an Assistant Director:

•           Bachelor’s degree

•           Academic advising experience or experience working directly with college students

•           At least one year of experience working directly in an NCAA student-athlete academic support unit

•           Experience working and communicating with diverse groups of people

 

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

•           For Academic Coordinator, at least one year of experience working directly in an NCAA student-athlete academic support unit

•           Master’s Degree

•           Experience working with Native BANNER/BANNER WEB, NCAA data submissions, Degree Audit Reporting Systems (DARS/NCAA DARS)

•           Experience working with student-athletes

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

•           Excellent communication skills, both oral and written

•           Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and promote an inclusive work environment

•           Organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and complete projects in a timely manner

•           Strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office programs

•           Knowledge of NCAA rules/regulations

•           Ability to maintain confidentiality

•           Ability to make decisions and handle conflicts

•           Problem-solving skills and creativity

•           Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

•           Basic understanding of FERPA rules/regulations

•           Leadership and managerial skills

•           General understanding of the admission application process
