The WVU Center for Excellence in STEM Education seeks applications for a WVUteach Master Teacher.
  • The WVU Center for Excellence in STEM Education seeks applications for a Master Teacher with a strong background in science education, preferably the physical sciences, who will be instrumental in the WVUteach program for preparing WVU science and mathematics majoring students to become certified as secondary school science and mathematics teachers.
Start date: August 2022 or January 2023

Qualifications:
  • The WVUteach Master Teacher appointments will be at the rank Service Instructor, Service Assistant Professor, or a higher service-track rank, depending on qualifications. All qualification requirements must be met by the time of appointment.
  • Service Instructor: Qualifications include a master’s degree in a STEM discipline or education (National Board Certification or a bachelor's with at least 6 years of secondary classroom teaching experience is considered equivalent);
  • Service Assistant Professor or higher: Qualifications include a Ph.D. or Ed.D. or equivalent experience (a master’s degree with National Board Certification or at least 7 years of high school classroom teaching experience in a STEM discipline is considered equivalent);
  • Candidates for any of these ranks must have at least one STEM-focused degree.
Also requires:
  • Having taught successfully as a high school classroom teacher with a minimum of five years of science teaching experience in United States public schools;
  • Deep familiarity with United States public school systems;
  • Excellent written and oral communication and teaching skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and mentor students completing field placements, and to effectively build and sustain a placement network in public school classrooms;
  • Evidence of administrative skills, attention to detail, and ability to interact effectively with district personnel regarding school curricula, schedules, and other logistics and issues important to WVUteach goals; and
  • Ability to work with colleagues in a collaborative environment to implement all aspects of the WVUteach initiative.
Service faculty appointments are full-time, nine-month appointments with full benefits. Service Assistant Professors are eligible for promotion, e.g., to Service Associate Professor, and Service Instructors are promotable following completion of an appropriate degree or by exception in the letter of appointment or by the Center director; however, promotion is not a requirement for institutional commitment and career stability.

Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities in these Service faculty appointments are defined as instructional service. Annual workload plans will include teaching ARSC 120: Inquiry Approaches to Teaching, ARSC 220: Inquiry‐Based Lesson Design, and supporting or teaching other WVUteach courses; coordinating undergraduate students in field-based teaching placements and assisting students with developing lesson plans and materials as part of these courses; advising WVUteach students; identifying and training local area public school teachers who will act as mentors for the students; conducting field observations; developing and overseeing student extra-curricular activities; serving as a bridge between WVUteach and local public schools; and representing WVUteach internally and externally. Additional duties will include student mentoring and induction support for early-career teacher graduates and could include sponsoring student organizations or contributing to acquiring grant and donor support for the program.
