ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR FOR OPERATIONS & FACILITIES

Recreation and Well-Being is seeking an Associate Director for Facilities & Operations to join our collaborative, equity-focused team. This position is responsible for the administration and management of facility operations, housekeeping, and maintenance, ensuring that these activities align with the mission of RecWell to advance student success by empowering the VCU community to prioritize well-being, connect with others, and learn through play. The responsibilities of this position encompass a wide variety of administrative and supervisory duties in the areas of finance, personnel management, and program management; policy development; risk management; assessment, staff development; and project management. The Associate Director serves as a member of the departmental leadership team, providing senior leadership for a comprehensive recreation and well-being program and reports to the Director of Recreation and Well-Being.

The Associate Director for Facilities & Operations will be responsible for the following:
Personnel Management (30%)


●Provide senior leadership for the operations, aquatics, housekeeping and maintenance teams, including direct supervision for the Assistant Director for Operations, Assistant Director for Facility Maintenance, and the Housekeeping Manager.
●Effectively communicate departmental, Division, and University mission, vision, values and goals to staff.
●Support and foster a comprehensive philosophy for student staff development and ensure all programming areas align with this philosophy.
●Effectively prepare staff to identify risks and make critically sound decisions that uphold the department’s shared values.
●Support the training and development of direct reports by establishing individual goals and development opportunities, routinely providing feedback on performance and identifying specific areas for continued growth.
●Ensure compliance with all departmental and University guidelines and procedures.

Operations & Maintenance (30%)

●Establish a comprehensive strategic plan for areas of direct oversight and ensure activities support the overall mission of the department.
●Develop a culture of customer service that supports a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging environment.
●Ensure effective communication with internal and external customers regarding changes and updates to regular operations.
●Oversee facility renovation and improvement projects, including the creation of bid specifications, providing project oversight, and ensuring work is done in compliance with University guidelines.
●Establish a comprehensive risk management plan for the department and ensure compliance with department and university guidelines for risk mitigation, training, and response.
●Oversee a comprehensive risk management plan for the department, serving as the Advisor to the Risk Management Committee.


Program Management (20%)


●Lead the ongoing planning, implementation, and evaluation of inclusive, accessible, and welcoming programs that minimize risk while focusing on fun and positive experiences for participants.
●Participate in the development of department and program area specific strategic plans, goals, and measurable outcomes to guide and evaluate all activities.
●Foster programmatic growth by encouraging collaborative efforts, supporting student learning, and identifying emerging trends in programmatic areas.
●Work with team members to assess and report strategic outcomes.
●Facilitate collaboration with key stakeholders to develop a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to programs that addresses key recreation and well-being issues, such as belonging and connectedness that provide multiple points of entry for participation by prioritizing introductory programs and services for new students.
●Work with key stakeholders to integrate programs into academic and other learning environments, potentially instructing courses in partnership with academic departments.
●Work through the established channels to engage in dynamic and purposeful marketing and promotion of Sport Programs through the collaborative development of digital, print, social, and other media.
●Work with others to develop innovative models that remove barriers to student engagement while ensuring the long-term sustainability of programs.
●Ensure the creation, revision, and implementation of standard operating procedures for all programming areas in adherence with established University and departmental guidelines.
●Provide guidance in the development and implementation of an effective risk management plan for all areas of oversight, ensuring compliance with department and university guidelines and appropriate follow-up on critical incidents.


Administrative (20%)


●Serve as a member of the department’s senior leadership team, contributing to long-range strategic planning, facility planning, budget development, and student learning.
●Serve as a Fusion expert for the department, assisting in the training of other team members and managing support tickets.
●Provide responsible and ethical management of resources within designated program area(s), including developing, managing, and reconciling program budgets.
●Manage reserve fund use plan to incorporate facility renovation/enhancement needs and programmatic initiatives.
●Ensure compliance with departmental and program area risk management plans that includes staff training, certification requirements, program management, regular audits, emergency action plans, and appropriate documentation.
●Investigate new and emerging trends and explore opportunities for growth within recreation and well-being programming.
●Actively contribute to shared knowledge in this growing field by participating in professional organizations.
●Participate in Division and University-wide events and committees as needed.
●Serve as part of the onsite/oncall team, providing regular evening and weekend supervisory support.
●Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:


●Master’s Degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Health and Physical Education, Higher Education Administration, or related field.
●Minimum of three (3) years of experience supervising full-time staff with demonstrated experience in all aspects of personnel management and staff development.
●Experience in operations, aquatics, and/or facility maintenance.
●Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a University and Academic member at VCU
●Demonstrated administrative skills and experience in: planning, implementing, and evaluating programs; budget development and fiscal/statistical management; long-range planning; project management; organizational strategic planning; and risk management
●Knowledge of best practices and standards in collegiate recreation.
●Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
●Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

Preferred:


●Experience in a university/college setting.
●Facility renovation project management experience.
●Experience leading or working on cross-functional teams.
●American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
●Experience using Fusion recreation management software.

Other Requirements:


●Position involves working some evening and weekend hours.
●Position is located in a non-smoking work area.



Salary Range: $75,000-$82,000
