Position Summary

This person will work in tandem with the Director particularly focusing on policy development, strategic planning, retention efforts, departmental recruitment efforts, risk management, supervision, assessment, and serve as a key liaison to campus units . This position supports an approved succession strategy for full-time staff at the Asian American Resource Center.

The Associate Director assumes a significant role to support essential programming efforts to educate the campus on issues related to the Asian American community. The person is directly responsible for development and implementation of value-based leadership development, cultural competency skills development, and academic support programs that focus on retention of Asian American students.

This person is responsible for providing leadership and implementation of key functional areas that include: Retention Initiatives, Cultural Education, Leadership Development, Outreach and Community Building, Marketing & Assessment, and Departmental Recruitment Initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Responsible for providing leadership, strategic plans, implementation, and assessment of functional areas that include: Advocacy & Training, Retention Initiatives, Cultural Education and Engagement, Leadership Development, Outreach and Community Relations, Marketing & Assessment, and Departmental Recruitment Initiatives. The person is directly responsible for development and implementation of value-based leadership development, cultural competency skills development, and academic support programs that focus on retention and recruitment of Asian American students. The Associate Director assumes a significant role to support essential advocacy efforts on behalf of the Asian American community at NIU consisting of students, faculty, and staff, and Asian-interest student organizations.

2. Responsible for overseeing Retention Efforts for Asian American students, including Weekly Retention Series, Peer Mentor Program, Boey Honors Program, Leadership Initiatives (ie: training sessions, workshops) and Annual AAPI Graduation Recognition. Collaborate with Academic Support Services to support early alert retention programs for academically at-risk and/or first generation Asian American students. Develop and provide on-going oversight of communication media that support retention efforts including the web page, social media, Facebook, brochures, and newsletters.

3. Supervision. Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate FT or part-time staff assigned, graduate assistants, student workers, peer mentors, interns, and volunteers. Create and manage budgets related to areas of supervision, including but not limited to: Peer Mentor Program, Retention Efforts, Domestic and Cultural Travel. 15

4. Provide campus-wide initiatives that educate and engage campus community regarding AAPI issues, topics, traditions, heritage, and history including coordination and implementation of: AAPI speaker series, Asian American Heritage Month, workshops, training sessions, and immersion experiences.

5. Lead assessment strategies for annual priorities, programs, and services: Develop and implement strategic goals that serve the Asian American campus community, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, and community members. Create objectives, learning outcomes, scripts, and assessment tools for departmental enhancement. Track retention and outreach efforts utilizing university technologies and other relevant methods. Create annual reports for program, budget, and assessment reviews. Evaluate outcomes and implement change for program enhancement.

6. Oversee departmental recruitment and outreach efforts (ie: Summer Orientation, NIU Open Houses, Transfer Days, International Orientation, Welcome Days, etc). Represent the department to support recruitment efforts on and off campus.

7. Develop effective collaborations with campus units, departments, faculty, and staff interfacing with the Asian American Resource Center. Create effective partnerships and serve as a liaison to various constituencies. Participate in divisional activities. Serve on university-wide and departmental committees approved by the Director.

8. Communicate, interpret, and enforce university and departmental policies and risk management policies related to services, programs, and utilization of the center’s facility. Formulate new departmental policies when needed. Meet with constituents regarding risk management expectations/protocols and determine course of action.

9. Engage in additional projects and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER
1. Bachelor’s degree.
2. A total of one (1) year (12 months) in Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders ( AAPI ) Cultural Centers or similar environment.
3. Based on position requirements, additional education, training and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position, may be required.
*Note: Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1 year) of work experience.

  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Student Personnel Administration
  • Demonstrated experience supervising Full-Time staff
  • Demonstrated background working in progressively more responsible administrative roles in an Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders ( AAPI ) Cultural Centers
  • Strong knowledge base and application of student development and racial/ethnic identity theories
  • Knowledge and application of identity, issues, learning theories, and trends affecting AAPI students; experience implementing initiatives that address these needs.
  • Demonstrated experience with recruitment and retention initiatives for AAPI college students
  • Demonstrated experience working with first-generation AAPI students
  • Demonstrated experience with outreach initiatives at university level with AAPI population (i.e.: students, alumni, community)
  • Demonstrated experience in assessment and strategic planning
  • Demonstrated experience working with multi-ethnic identities
  • Demonstrated experience working with faculty and staff
  • Demonstrated experience in facility utilization and management
  • Strong communication skills (excellent oral, written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills)
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail
