The Medical Director will provide at least ten to twenty (10-20) hours of contact to the program each Academic year. This contact will be teaching time and support for the program, and will include attendance at least one (1) Program Advisory Board meeting per year.

This position addresses physician leadership for all aspects of the Program at Utica University. The medical director of the program must provide the input necessary to ensure that the medical components of the curriculum, both didactic and supervised clinical practice, meets current standards of medical practice. The medical director must also assure physician instructional involvement in the training of respiratory care students.

The medical director of the Program has the administrative responsibility of acting as liaison and advocate of the Program among staff physicians, administrators, and allied health care professionals at clinical affiliates and should be called upon, if necessary, to facilitate physician/student interactions.

The Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) stresses the importance of physician/student interaction. CoARC has delineated four categories that students should seek-out physician interaction in order to develop the appropriate physician-therapist rapport.

Major Responsibilities: 

  • Serves as a regular active participant on the program’s advisory committee which holds two meetings per academic calendar year.
  • Annually review the program’s course content for medical accuracy and to ensure parallel didactic and clinical experiences between clinical affiliates.
  • With the Director of Clinical Education, provides feedback to the Program Director and academic faculty about the cognitive, psychomotor, and behavioral progress of the clinical students.
  • Assists the Director of Clinical Education in recruiting the participation of physicians at the affiliated clinical sites.
  • Develops collaborative relationships with medical staff and hospital departments to facilitate and support the quality physician interaction experience required by CoARC.
  • Participates in a bi-monthly classroom discussion or teaching experience as agreed on by the Program Director and Medical Director

Qualifications:

Medical Director must be a licensed physician and Board certified as recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA), credentialed at Utica University’s clinical affiliates, with recognized qualifications, by training and/or experience, in the management of respiratory disease and in respiratory care practices. Understands the role and function of the Respiratory Therapist in various settings.

Preferred: Board certified in Pulmonology; Critical Care; Anesthesiology; or Sleep
