Washington and Lee University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Assistant Coach of Men’s and Women’s Swimming/Aquatics Coordinator. Founded in 1749, Washington and Lee is a highly selective, residential, co-educational, liberal arts university of 1857 students located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The University is a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and NCAA Division III, sponsoring 24 varsity sports.

This is a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure track faculty position reporting to the Head Coach of Men’s and Women’s Swimming and the Director of Athletics. The successful candidate will teach in our required physical education program, as well as assume the role of Aquatics Coordinator. Candidates must be committed to a philosophy of being an educator, building a positive, respected program, and exhibit a strong commitment toward adhering to Washington and Lee’s Physical Education and Athletics Department, NCAA, and ODAC policies and guidelines.

Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting with swimmer training and technique development; practice planning.
  • Identification and recruitment of athletically and academically qualified student-athletes.
  • Serve as aquatics coordinator, which includes scheduling all pool activities; hiring, training, scheduling and supervision of qualified lifeguards; developing and scheduling aquatic programming for the pool including classes, swim meets, swim lessons, lap swimming, camps, teams and other aquatic programs as developed and assigned.
  • Schedule and manage team travel, including lodging, transportation, and meal arrangements in accordance with budgetary restrictions.
  • Manage social media accounts for the men’s and women’s swimming programs.
  • Ensure compliance with all Association, Conference, and University rules by athletes and supporting staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

A bachelor’s degree, collegiate swimming experience and collegiate coaching experience, or the equivalent of education and experience, and a lifeguard certification are required. A master’s degree and CPO certification preferred. Must possess a valid drivers license. The salary will be commensurate with the education and experience of the successful candidate.
