  • This position is remote with occasional work on the Flagstaff Mountain Campus. Living in Flagstaff is not required.


Job Description

NAU Communications is seeking one (1) skilled and experienced Communications Coordinator, Intermediate or Communications Coordinator, Senior to join our team. The position is responsible for internal and external communications for all of Northern Arizona University, including our flagship Flagstaff Mountain campus and our 22 statewide campuses. The office sends all campuswide emails for NAU and the Office of the President, produces The NAU Review newsletter, publishes stories to news website and handles media outreach and requests and public records. The office works with faculty, staff and administrators throughout the university to tell NAU's story in line with NAU 2025 - Elevating Excellence, our recently adopted set of strategic priorities, to a variety of stakeholders, including the NAU community, the public, legislators and donors.

The successful candidate will possess excellent written and verbal communications skills; be able to work well both collaboratively and individually; with supervision, find and write stories and other content; work well under deadlines and be able to balance a variety of projects at the same time; approach communications creatively and look for new ways to communicate with our various stakeholder groups; be able to take complex topics and break them down into understandable and interesting stories; and handle the stress and constantly changing environment when called upon for emergency communications. In addition, the successful Senior candidate will independently build and manage relationships with people throughout campus.

Job Duties

Communications Coordinator, Intermediate

Writing and Editing - 50%
  • Writing new stories and website content.
  • Editing news stories, website content, graphics, submitted materials, and campuswide emails.
  • Working with NAU students, faculty, and staff to solicit user-produced content on relevant and timely topics.

Marketing Cloud Distribution - 25%
  • Planning, producing, and sending the twice-weekly newsletter.
  • Editing and formatting campuswide emails using Marketing Cloud.
  • Being point on all Marketing Cloud issues; becoming an expert and using expertise to help other departments transition.
  • Managing contact data for all subscribers.
  • Designing templates.

Website Maintenance - 10%
  • Update the news website and other sites as needed.
  • Research, write, and edit site information.

Emergency Communications - 5%
  • Sending emergency communications, including late-night/early morning communications for snow days and other comms outside of normal business hours as needed. This includes updating website, drafting emails, and planning timeline.

University Collaborations - 5%
  • Working with campus and community stakeholders and serving on various committees, such as Homecoming and Giving Day.
  • Helping to lead communication workshops.
  • Interdepartmental collaborations.
  • Guiding student worker activity.

Other - 5%
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Communications Coordinator, Senior

  • Editing news stories, website content, graphics, submitted materials, and campuswide emails.
  • Working with NAU students, faculty and staff to solicit user-produced content on relevant and timely topics.

Marketing Cloud Distribution - 30%
  • Planning, producing and sending the twice-weekly newsletter.
  • Serve as the Marketing Cloud expert/point person for the office.
  • Editing and formatting campuswide emails using Marketing Cloud.
  • Being point on all Marketing Cloud issues; becoming an expert and using expertise to help other departments transition
  • Managing contact data for all subscribers
  • Designing templates
  • Using analytics in Marketing Cloud, Google Analytics, Cision.

Website Maintenance - 10%
  • Update the news website and other sites; doing basic front-end web development as needed.
  • Research, write, and edit site information.

University Collaborations - 10%
  • Working with campus and community stakeholders and serving on various campus committees, such as Homecoming and Giving Day.
  • Representing NAU Communications throughout campus.
  • Leading communication workshops.
  • Interdepartmental collaborations.
  • Assigning work to and mentoring student workers.

Emergency Communications - 5%
  • Sending emergency communications, including late-night/early morning communications for snow days and other comms outside of normal business hours as needed. This includes updating website, drafting emails, and planning timeline.

Other - 5%
  • Serving as the backup public records officer
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Communications Coordinator, Intermediate
  • Associate degree in journalism, communications, or related field.
  • 2-4 years of relevant communications experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Communications Coordinator, Senior
  • Associate degree in journalism, communications, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of relevant communications experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field.
  • Photography experience.
  • Familiarity with Wordpress, Marketing Cloud, Canva.
  • Knowledge of MS Office suite.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. Salary

Communications Coordinator, Intermediate anticipated salary range is $36,018 - $45,023*.

Communications Coordinator, Senior anticipated salary range is $41,421 - $51,776*.

*Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
