Job Summary

Reporting to the Associate Manager of the Equipment Room, this position assists with the purchasing, tracking, stocking and maintenance of athletic equipment and supplies for Harvard's intercollegiate athletic programs. Direct responsibility for supporting the Women's Varsity Ice Hockey program and other sports, as assigned. The person in this position will work directly with the women's hockey coaches and the student athletes.

Basic Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must have a minimum of three years of experience sharpening and repairing ice hockey skates, including repair of eyelets and rivets
  • Knowledge of ice hockey machines, including use of heat machine
  • Must be able to lift and move heavy objects (up to 150 pounds)
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • AEMA (Athletic Equipment Managers Association) certification preferred
  • Experience working in an educational setting preferred
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills, including the ability to work with and relate well to a diverse group of athletes, administrators, and University constituents.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and a database.

Position Description
  • Primary person responsible for running the heat machines (for new skates), rivet machine, eyelet machine and skate sharpener. Sharpens 200 plus skates per week (4-5 hours per day).
  • Travels (20% of the time) with team to away games and performs the functions listed above. Packs equipment on bus, travel trunk (approx. 150 lbs.), stick bag (approx. 150 lbs. and individual team bags (approx. 50 lbs. each).
  • On daily basis, checks all hockey equipment (helmets, shin guards, shoulder pads, practice pants, game pants, game shirts, practice shirts, etc.) for preparedness and safety prior to games and practices. Checks and repairs all hockey sticks and shafts on sticks. Repair and recondition equipment either in-house or working with outside vendors
  • Issues new equipment and apparel to student-athletes. Ensures proper fit of protective and regular equipment. Assists with laundering of student-athlete uniforms. Maintains inventory records using a web-based tracking system.
  • Monitors spending against the line item budget for maintenance, repair, and reconditioning. Makes recommendations on potential cost savings in this area. Stay updated with current safety protocols.
