Senior Financial Analyst
About the Opportunity
The university central budget office seeks a senior financial analyst to analyze and monitor unit budgets, measure administrative performance, and improve operational efficiency in support of advancing the academic plan known as Northeastern 2025. The university budget team creates the centralized forecast models and supports a portfolio of colleges and operating units in their annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting efforts. The individual will also develop reports and evaluate data crucial to the appropriate oversight of university financial results and will assist financial managers around the university in resolving financial issues as they arise. The incumbent is in frequent contact with financial administrators around the university and will interact regularly with colleagues both in the schools and colleges, and in the central financial administration. The position is a customer focused role. Key responsibilities include:
- Developing, monitoring, and reporting on budget performance at
both the division and consolidated levels;
- Assisting with management and improvement of the budget
process;
- Preparing monthly forecasting at both the division and
consolidated levels
- Working with assigned divisions to ensure robust departmental
budget submissions and engage in ongoing conversations regarding
business factors that impact monthly forecasting
- Analyze trends and relationships between key financial data
points
- Build positive relationships with key business partners to
foster an environment of cooperation and trust
- Ensure timely standardized reports for senior
management
- Act as area expert for budget tools and reports; explore tools
and technologies to improve business processes
- Conduct ad-hoc financial analysis, collecting and analyzing
data from business partners
- Help prepare well-developed analyses and presentations; being
able to summarize key points in an organized way to "tell the
story" of the numbers and trends
- Act as point person for business units and further build
relationships by beginning to develop an understanding of other
general finance matters outside of core budget functions
- Evaluate and report on key monthly, quarterly, and annual
performance metrics
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in budget analysis, financial reporting, financial analysis, or similar experience working with financial data
- Advanced experience with Excel
- Exceptional analytical skills with demonstrated ability to solve problems by asking the right questions, thinking creatively, and involving subject matter experts
- Experience with business intelligence tools/ ad hoc query tools, developing queries from scratch
- Strong customer service orientation characterized by curiosity and responsiveness; ability to develop trusted relationships across central and divisional units
- Experience with business process analysis and continuous process improvement
- Ability to work both independently and as a collaborative team member
- Strong attention to detail and communication skills
- Own all assigned tasks with minimum supervision
- Ability to exercise good judgement when dealing with sensitive matters
- Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally to solve problems and implement changes
