Marketing Communications Specialist, Editor

The Marketing Communications Specialist, Editor, is part of the Creative Services team in the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences Marketing Unit and is responsible for editing and proofreading educational publications, marketing communications, and various other messaging for the college and Penn State Extension.

The primary function of this position is to collaborate with authors and colleagues to produce print and digital long- and short-format educational materials disseminating the practical application of college research to the general public and industry partners. A secondary function is working with colleagues in providing quality assurance and consistency for marketing content targeting key audiences including current and future students, parents, alumni, industry partners, key stakeholders, and current and potential customers. Must develop an understanding of and appreciation for these audiences and their specific needs. This position will be the University Editor for the college—learning, documenting, disseminating, and upholding university and college editorial standards.

Education and Experience:

Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus six or more years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The successful candidate will possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communications skills, attention to detail, a dedication to quality and client service, and an enduring appreciation for diverse audiences. In addition, candidate must be agile in meeting the needs of a fast-paced, highly productive team, with the ability to shift priorities and multi-task in order to meet aggressive deadlines. The position requires initiative, excellent judgment, a high level of self-direction and personal accountability and the ability to manage complex projects to successful completion in a timely manner. Often the first point of contact between authors and the creative team, this position is key to establishing a positive, professional, and collaborative relationship with stakeholders and colleagues.

This position requires proven experience in editing educational publications (1 to 800 pages) which may contain multiple chapters, complex tables, and numerous citations. Successful candidates will also have experience in proofreading marketing content such as brochures, emails, web pages, fliers, display ads, signage, video scripts, as well as speeches, policy documents, and assorted other communications. Must be highly familiar with Chicago manual of style and have an expert command of the English language. This position primarily uses—and the successful candidate must be proficient in—the Microsoft Office suite and Adobe Acrobat. This position may supervise freelance or part-time editors.

Desired but not required are supervisory experience, knowledge of and experience in ADA accessibility standards for screen readers, copywriting skills, and familiarity with project management systems. A background in or experience with agricultural subject matter is a plus.
