JOB SUMMARY :
The Accountant performs professional accounting work of a complex nature. They thoroughly understand institutional, state, and federal policies, procedures and restrictions as related to public Higher Education. The Accountant ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles in executing, analyzing, verifying, and reporting transactions of a fiscal nature. The Accountant may serve as a project leader on special projects.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES :
  • Supports accounting unit by preparing daily, bi-weekly, and monthly journal entries such as those related to cashiering, reclasses, allocations and corrections. Also researches, Identifies and post revenue transactions received via R*Stars.
  • Serves as support to the accounting unit by performing monthly account reconciliations and account analysis to include the following: Perkins Loan Activity reconciliation; Cash Deposit reconciliation; Clearing Account Reconciliations; Working Fund account reconciliation; Payroll reconciliation and others as required.
  • Trains to become a Controller’s Office data entry user for R*Stars (State Accounting System), to facilitate keying in manual journal entries and cash receipt transactions.
  • Performs activities to assist the Senior Accountant for Asset Management with day-to-day tracking, tagging, and recording activity for campus sensitive and capital assets.
  • Performs activities to assist Senior Accountant and Assistant Controller with month-end and year­end closing processes to include preparation of required journals, schedules, and reports. Will assist with preparation of Interim and Year-end Financial Statements and required audit schedules.
  • Will function to provide customer service and support to University’s management, faculty, and staff by responding to questions, and providing financial information and necessary reports.
  • Will perform additional duties as identified and required.
Required Qualifications

EDUCATION :
  • Bachelor’s Degree with concentration in accounting or a closely related degree required.
  • Master’s degree with concentration in accounting or CPA highly preferred, but not required.
EXPERIENCE :
  • Minimum 2 years working in an accounting department or as a financial accounting auditor.
  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Experience in public Higher Ed accounting office or as Higher Ed financial or compliance auditor.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft Financials and/or WorkDay Financials.
  • Experience with State of Maryland accounting system “R*STARS”.
Preferred Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS :
  • Demonstrate high level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to meet specified due dates and timelines.
  • Advanced user knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Understanding and/or experience in preparation of or audit of Financial Statements.
  • Experience reconciling bank and general ledger accounts to include identifying and resolving differences.
  • Experience in applying basic analytical skills in reviewing transactions.
  • Experience with robust Financial Accounting Software with ability to quickly learn new software.
