Job Description

This is a two-year hire in support of SU’s Energy and Environment Cluster.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work with Drs. Jensen Zhang and Bing Dong of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Drs. Bess Krietemeyer and Nina Sharifi of School of Architecture strengthening an established research program on healthy, energy-efficient, and smart buildings and cities by advancing the development of an integrated modeling, simulation, and control platform, the Green Design Studio ( GDS ) for multi-scale built environmental system optimization and intelligent control, presenting research findings at conferences and workshops, publishing research papers, and assisting in the preparation of applications for external funding to government agencies (e.g., NSF, DOE, EPA, HUD ) and industrial collaborators.

Current research examines air, energy and people flows, contaminant sources, sinks and transport, energy demands, supplies and storage, building and urban design, and how they affect the indoor air quality, urban microclimate, and energy efficiencies of buildings and cities under current and future climate conditions.

A modular-based green design studio ( GDS ) is being developed to provide an integrated simulation platform for predicting the effectiveness of various design, management, and control strategies to minimize human exposure to air pollutants, reduce the risk of disease transmission (such as COVID 19), reduce the energy consumption and associated carbon emissions and improve human health and performance.

The Postdoctoral Fellow’s research will be focused on further developing the GDS and its applications. For broadening the training, he/she will also have the opportunity and will be encouraged to exchange and collaborate with other faculty members of the Energy and Environment cluster covering research ranging from quantum/nano/material scales, to building, neighborhood, and urban scales, and to regional, continental and global climate scales. This is a full-time position beginning in Fall 2022.

Qualifications
  • A doctoral degree in mechanical, environmental or architectural engineering or equivalent is required.
  • Experience in areas of indoor or urban air quality, building simulations, environmental and energy system control, architectural design or urban planning is preferred.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Candidate is expected to have training in building sciences and engineering with strong mathematical modeling, computer programming and simulation skills and a publication record commensurate with professional experience.
  • Should be conversant with relevant simulation, programing and design software packages such as EnergyPlus, CONTAM, Fluent/ CFD, Python, C++, C#, Matlab, Autodesk, Grasshopper, GIS, etc. Candidate does not need to have prior knowledge of the GDS platform itself.
Responsibilities
  • Advance the development of GDS platform including methodology, new component modules, algorithms, and interfaces between different modules and approach to interface with virtual reality and augmented reality (VR/AR) techniques for visualization.
  • Candidate has the opportunity to propose and define the specific focus of his/her work in the platform development and collaborate with graduate students in the area.
  • He/she will also have the opportunities to apply the GDS platform in a variety of research projects including multi-scale IAQ control strategies, urban morphology and microclimate analysis, building and urban energy efficiency analysis, smart building and city management and control, and building retrofitting performance predictions.
  • Write and publish articles in peer-reviewed journals. Collaborate on proposals for external funding.
  • Present research at professional conferences. Supervise and collaborate with graduate students.
