Job Description:

A full time Research Assistant position in the research laboratory at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. This individual will be responsible to assist and conduct experiments regarding the effects of aging and diabetes on skeleton and bone stem cells. The laboratory duties include: Cellular and Molecular Biology – growing and differentiating bone stem cells, analysis of gene expression using real time PCR, routine enzymatic assays; Bone Analysis – assisting in imaging and analysis of bone structure using micro computed tomography (mCT), histologic and histomorphometric analysis of bone paraffin sections; Animal Experiments - Handling mice, assisting in bone surgeries, maintenance of mice colony including breeding and genotyping of offspring, performing glucose and insulin tolerance tests, and assisting in writing animal protocols for IACUC approval; Computer skills – Entering data collected from experiments into data analysis programs, preparation of data sheets for statistical analysis, preparation of figures for publications; Maintaining lab inventories of chemicals and archived samples.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Bachelors Degree in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, or relates area required.
2. Masters Degree in above discipline(s) preferred.
3. Extensive Training, skills, and experience in the use of tissue cultures, and laboratory experimentation required.
4. Ability to assist with writing drafts of research manuscripts required.
5. Minimum 2 years of laboratory experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Advanced computer skills with knowledge of data analysis and graphic programs.
2. Ability to work independently.
3. Ability to communicate effectively in English both written and verbally with co-workers.
4. Must write in clear scientifically acceptable language. Maintains a professional image and standard of behavior.
