Position Information

This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position.

The incumbent may be required to work some nights and weekends based on operational needs.

Major Duties

Under the general direction of the Toro Learning & Testing Center (TLTC) Director, the Tutor Coordinator serves as the liaison to the TLTC tutoring services, and student staff in the Learning Center. In addition, the Tutor Coordinator will assist the TLTC Director in overseeing the Learning Center Coordinator and front desk operations. The Tutor Coordinator will serve as department lead for ISA recruitment efforts and faculty partner relations. The Tutor Coordinator will assist the Senior Coordinator in developing, facilitating, and maintaining pre-semester and ongoing training according to College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) standards, programmatic needs, and new instructional services or revision to current practices/services. The Tutor Coordinator will create, revise, and/or maintain programming as needed to meet demands of DH students.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution.

Experience: the equivalent of three (3) years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, Education, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.

Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student‑related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.

Responsibilities

60% Coordination of tutoring services and providing a variety of related support services to meet student academic needs:

-Oversee, and evaluate Learning Center Instructional Student Assistants, (ISAs), provide work direction and guidance; coordinate work assignments and review work for compliance with established guidelines and procedures; prepare, compile, and adjust tutoring schedules; review accuracy of tutor timesheets;

-Resolve tutoring issues and conflicts of varying degree of difficulty; advise ISAs on ways to support students on issues that affect their personal functioning, academic performance, and professional development;

-Develop and facilitate ongoing tutor training; lead training on tutoring service logistics;

-Assist the Senior Coordinator with pre-semester CRLA, programmatic center training and other center programming that involves tutors and service expansions based on student success center needs;

-Assist with tracking training and tutoring hours to monitor tutor CRLA certification progress;

-Follow up with tutors regularly for CRLA certification and to determine training needs; hold on-going semester training/meetings;

-Use Toro Success Collaborative and other feedback and assessment tools to assess program efficacy; obtain feedback from tutors and students on services; review, compile, analyze data, write reports, and present analysis of findings for program effectiveness, needs assessments, and end-of-term tutor evaluations; use findings to recommend needed training topics, supervisory issues, trends, etc.

-Monitor and adjust tutoring activities in response to student needs.

25% Learning Center Operations:

-Assist the Director in overseeing the Learning Center Coordinator and student assistants assigned to the Learning Center;

-Participate in the selection, on-boarding, scheduling, training, and assigning workloads of Learning Center Student Assistants;

-Assist the Learning Center Coordinator with scheduling, and service decisions as needed; develop and implement guidelines concerning accessibility of learning services and facilities.

10% Student Employee Recruitment and Faculty Engagement:

-Lead the recruitment and participate in hiring of SA and ISA staff to include reviewing applications, interviews, and make recommendations to fill all ISA positions;

-Assist with the TLTC Senior Coordinator and Student Success Center staff (Advisors, Internship Specialist, Faculty Mentors) to recruit from colleges and fill college/department/course/faculty specific ISA positions.

-Work closely with the director to oversee faculty engagement and faculty use of Learning Center space and resources.

5% Other duties as assigned by supervisor
