Department Summary
The department of University Communications is charged with telling the University of Oregon's (UO) stories to a broad range of audiences and positioning the university to succeed and thrive. The department utilizes and manages a comprehensive suite of communications tools, including public relations, branding, advertising, licensing, digital media, and more for the benefit of the University.
Position Summary
The Associate Vice President and Chief of Staff for University Communications (AVP/COS) plays a central role on the University Communications (UC) leadership team in leading, growing, and maximizing alignment in collaboration across the functional portfolios to be a world-class communications organization.
Reporting directly to the Vice President for University Communications (VP), the AVP/COS is a member of UC's Senior Staff and works closely with UC leadership team members to establish and evaluate department priorities and recommend strategies to meet objectives within UC in support of the University's mission of research, teaching, and public service.
The AVP/COS serves as a key advisor to the VP on both strategic and tactical matters and works with the UA team to provide innovative and creative solutions to execute UC goals and objectives. The AVP/COS will also represent UC as a member of the Chiefs of Staff meeting in coordination and collaboration with other campus offices.
The AVP/COS will work closely with the University Advancement Chief of Staff in setting the direction and priorities for the shared services team (finance/budget, payroll/timekeeping, human resources, and operations).
This role has considerable responsibility in representing UC leadership, best practice recommendations, and building partnerships internal and external to UC. This position is expected to have and exhibit excellent delegation and communication skills. In addition, the AVP/COS will be responsible for setting the tone and establishing a culture of service and collaboration in all manners of function responsibility.
As a member of the UC leadership team, the AVP/COS joins the UC Senior Staff's efforts to enhance and advance equity, inclusion, and diversity across all portfolios with UC.
Minimum Requirements

- Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of skills and
experience.
- Ten years of professional experience in complex institutions
and/or non-profit environments.
- Five years of progressively responsible experience working in
operations or related functions, preferably in an academic or
non-profit setting (an advanced degree in a related field will be
considered part of the experience).
- Three years of experience in a supervisory or management role
with at least one direct report.
Professional Competencies - Demonstrated experience with succession planning, performance
management, and organizational goal setting and
development.
- Direct experience working with executive leadership on change
management within an organization.
- Demonstrated experience in operations in a complex
organization.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to
communicate and work collaboratively with individuals from diverse
backgrounds and cultures.
- Effective communication skills.
- Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism,
discretion, and confidentiality.
- Excellent organizational skills, a strong sense of financial
accountability, and the ability to manage resources with prudence
and efficiency.
- Strong ability to problem solve, elevate priorities, and define
and manage risk.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience and the ability to develop
strategies to achieve operational goals. Ability to prioritize work
for self and others and manage multiple projects
simultaneously.
- Ability to interact, communicate, and work effectively with
individuals, recognizing and respecting the many and varied
identities of each person.
- Commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and
inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience in multi-institution benchmarking practices with
peer and aspirant peer institutions.
- Knowledge of state-of-the-art organizational development tools,
both automated and manual.
- Advanced degree.
- Experience in higher education and an understanding of the
nature of a professional school and research university.
