Reference & Instruction Librarian
Job Summary: The Reference & Instruction Librarian will assist in the development, expansion, and provision of library services including research and reference services to law students, faculty, and the University community. The Librarian contributes to library instruction by teaching legal research workshops and the first-year Legal Research and Writing course.
This tenure-track position includes expectations of engagement in appropriate professional organizations and professional service according to the obligations set forth in College of Law and University bylaws regarding tenure and promotion. The position is under the direct supervision and general direction of the Director of the Law Library.
Principle Responsibilities:
- Provide high-quality reference services to College of Law faculty, students, administration, staff, and University community Participate in reference desk rotations including some evening & weekend coverage Design, administer, and analyze annual student Law Library satisfaction survey Provide instruction services through legal research workshops, presentations in seminar courses, and in first-year Legal Research and Writing. Assist in the development of new instructional initiatives Update library instruction materials to meet changing landscape of legal and interdisciplinary research Assist in creating content for and updating library web pages and research guides Assist with special collections and archives projects Participate in collection development, including the review of both print and electronic materials Meet the requirements for tenure and promotion, including professional development and service Other duties as assigned
Required Skills:
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills Adaptability in the face of multiple simultaneous demands Demonstrated knowledge of best practices for legal research instruction Ability to conceptualize, implement, and coordinate library services, both independently and as part of a team Strong commitment to service Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills Ability to work independently and as part of a team Ability to lead and communicate effectively with all levels of colleagues Willingness to learn and stay current on the most effective legal research methods, strategies, teaching, and learning theories
Minimum Qualifications:
- J.D. from an ABA accredited law school Familiarity with legal bibliography, legal research methods, and online legal and non-legal research systems Coursework in Legal Research or experience working in a law library Experience with electronic resource management Experience with reference and instructional services in a library setting
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited graduate school, or equivalent Teaching experience, including preparing instructional materials and delivering content Familiarity programming or coding languages (Python, PHP, HTML, C++, etc.) Some familiarity with OCLC, WorldCat, and Worldshare systems Ability to use a content management system (e.g. Drupal) to develop and maintain web content
