Position Description

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago invites applications for a Research Associate position. The Research Associate will join a dynamic research group focusing on projects investigating potential mechanisms underpinning individual variability in speech and language processing using neurophysiological as well as eye-tracking techniques. The Research Associate’s primary responsibilities include setting up and performing experiments, collecting, maintaining and analyzing data, conducting literature reviews, assisting with preparing reports, manuscripts, and other documents, interacting with students and other laboratory staff in collaboration with the principal investigators (Ming Xiang and Alan Yu). Other responsibilities may include the following non-laboratory duties: assisting in recruiting and scheduling research subjects; assisting with developing or amending study protocols; assisting with developing data collection tools; assisting with building databases; and providing general administrative support. There are no required teaching responsibilities for the position, but occasional teaching may be possible after the first year depending on departmental need and the needs of the research group.

The expected start date is January 1, 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter, with an initial term of appointment until August 31, 2025. Reappointment is possible following a successful review during the third year. This is a renewable, benefits-eligible position.

Qualifications

Competitive applicants must have (i) a relevant PhD with post-doctoral training in Linguistics, Cognitive Science, the Speech Sciences, or a related field preferred; (ii) a strong background in phonetics, psycholinguistics, and laboratory phonology. Prior experience with either eye-tracking and or EEG data collection and analysis is desirable. Prior Experience in supervising mentees for research activities is welcome. The applicant should have good writing skills and strong publication records; and potential to develop independent research initiatives and obtain further grant funding.

The successful candidate must have completed the Ph.D. by the start of the appointment.
