Position Summary:
The Department of Plant Sciences invites exceptional applicants for a 9-month, non-tenure track Assistant Professor position in Horticulture. This position is a key to the instructional aspects of our Horticulture and Urban Agriculture major (Plant Science degree) which has been increasing in enrollment over the last five years and is a substantial portion of our undergraduate program. The successful applicant should demonstrate innovative and comprehensive teaching (90%) and committed service (10%) to horticultural education. Potential collaborators include Plant Science faculty and staff involved with the Sandpoint Organic Agricultural Center, controlled environment agriculture, Seed Potato Germplasm Laboratory, the Stillinger Herbarium, and pomology.The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally recognized teaching program and to effectively mentor undergraduate students in the Horticulture and Urban Agriculture major. The successful candidate will teach lower and upper division undergraduate level courses appropriate to the horticulture major and facilitate internships. Participation in undergraduate advising and mentoring is expected. The incumbent is also expected to be active in departmental and university service, and professional activities and outreach.
Minimum Qualifications:
- MS in plant sciences, horticulture, or related discipline
- Experience with floral, woody plant or vegetable/fruit crop production
- Experience with teaching horticulture, nursery management, or agronomy/plant science at the high school, community college, or university level or in an Extension/outreach program
- Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communications skills
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with colleagues and the public
Preferred Qualifications:
- Five years of work experience in the horticultural industry
- Demonstrated success in teaching horticulture and related coursework in higher education.
- Prior experience in academic advising and serving as a mentor for student groups.
- Experience mentoring undergraduate students in horticultural studies.
