Position Summary:
The University of Idaho is currently seeking to hire an Assistant Professor, Research Faculty -Extension Specialist - Human Nutrition & Health, to join the Margaret Ritchie School of Family and Consumer Sciences. The position is a 12-month, tenure-track position with 40% Extension and outreach; 40% scholarship and creative activities; 15% teaching and advising; and 5% university service and leadership expectations.

This Assistant Professor/Extension Specialist will provide evidence-based, nutrition-related educational programs that meet the needs of the department, general public, and state of Idaho. These outreach and Extension activities would include translating up-to-date critical analysis of the emerging nutrition literature to regional and county Extension educators and the public, and debunking diet-and-nutrition-related myths and unsubstantiated claims found in traditional and social media. This individual will also teach a hybrid undergraduate/graduate course related to nutrition education and conduct externally funded human nutrition research. Funding for Extension and research programs will be obtained from internal and external competitive grants.

The primary location of the position will be in Moscow, Idaho but considerable and sustained interaction with nutrition Extension faculty across the state will be required. The idyllic University of Idaho campus is co-located throughout the beautiful and rugged state of Idaho. The main campus is based in Moscow, a growing and lively community with all the benefits and opportunities typically available in a college town, such as excellent public and private schools, restaurants, and free public transportation as well as a plethora of diverse sports, world-class outdoor activities, and performing and visual arts offerings.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Doctorate in human nutrition or related discipline. ABD applicants must have an earned doctorate at the time of hire.
  • Substantial graduate-level training in the broad scope of nutritional sciences.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct funded research related to human nutrition.
  • Evidence of ability to obtain internal and external funding.
  • Basic understanding of the Cooperative Extension System and what it means to be a land-grant university.
  • Evidence of ability to provide leadership and coordinate Extension nutrition education programs that address nutrition needs of diverse populations throughout the lifecycle.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Expertise and/or interest in conducting interdisciplinary work, particularly with other faculty in the Margaret Ritchie School of Family and Consumer Sciences.
  • Experience teaching nutrition education.
  • Experience in conducting community nutrition programs and/or public health interventions.
  • Extension or similar work experience in formal or non-formal community nutrition education.
  • Coursework and experience with educational program evaluation.
  • Experience in web development, social media, and distance education and communication.
