Position Summary

Police Officer - University Police

Department of Public Safety and Transit

Full Time



Primary Responsibilities
  • Protects and serves the students, visitors, faculty, and staff of the Southeast Missouri State University campus
  • Patrols and protects the properties, buildings and grounds of campus
  • Investigates crimes for presentation to municipal and county attorneys for criminal prosecutions
  • Responds to requests for service and campus emergencies
  • Enforces student Code of Conduct and makes referrals to the Office of Student Conduct
  • Conducts patrols and makes routine security checks of campus buildings
  • Performs protective duties to provide police services in assigned areas of campus
  • Provides safety and crime prevention education for the campus community


  • Required Qualifications

  • Must have high school diploma or GED
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • College degree not required; college coursework or degree is a plus
  • Must submit to and pass a thorough background investigation. Must be free of any felony arrests or convictions, arrests or convictions of a crime of moral turpitude, or misdemeanor convictions for crimes of domestic violence
  • Must be current and in good standing with Missouri Department of Public Safety and licensed in accordance with Missouri Peace Officers Standards and Training Act of 1979 (POST)
  • New academy graduates welcome: experience is a plus
  • Must possess a valid Missouri operator's license
  • Must pass police officer selection test at the semi-finalist stage. Test date to be determined. Test location will be scheduled on campus
  • Must be available to work any hours, rotating shifts, days, nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of customer service and community policing philosophy
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse work environment, including working with multi-cultural populations and an understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting women and minorities
  • All offers of employment are contingent upon a verified negative drug screen and polygraph examination
