The Residence Director engages in operational, administrative, and programmatic initiatives for Student Living. This position is a 12 month, live-in position that is responsible for the management of a residential community, housing 250 to 1000 students, to which they are assigned and reports to an Assistant Director.

Responsibilities include educational, managerial, and administrative functions to provide an environment supportive of the University’s mission and vision. This includes implementation of Student Living’s curriculum; supervising student leaders; crisis intervention; participation in on-call; resolution of violations of Office of Student Living policies; and implementing programs designed to assist students in transitioning to campus living. This is a highly visible position with students and staff, providing day-to-day support to students, student employees, and multiple levels of staff. Qualifications
Educational Requirements: (minimum)
Master’s degree in student personnel, higher education, or related field is preferred. Evening and weekend commitments are expected. Residence Directors must reside in their provided on-campus apartment.

Experience Requirements (minimum):
Candidates should have previous residence hall or student advising experience and have confirmed skills in mediation, crisis intervention, problem solving, and decision-making. Also required is a demonstrated potential to supervise paraprofessional staff and experience in at least two of the following specialized areas: counseling, advisement, programming, student development, housing operations, residence hall safety and security, public relations, or summer programs.

Other Relevant Experiences Considered:
Candidates, who have other relevant experiences, including degrees in majors and minors that align with Learning Community concentrations, will be strongly considered. Job Specific Qualifications
Knowledge of student development, counseling and/or event management. Excellent written and verbal communication. Strong ability to handle multiple priorities and work across many different constituencies.

The Residence Director should support the development of an inclusive residence hall community and demonstrates cultural competency in race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, ability, gender, gender identity expression, sexual orientation, religion or national origin. Responsibilities
Residential Education & Learning Communities:
  • Utilizes a residential curriculum framework to foster student learning, development and engagement.
  • Assists RAs in assessing the needs of residents and developing floor programs to meet their needs.
  • Advises student organizations, supported by theory and best practice.
  • Advises students informally with regard to personal, social, and academic problems, and when necessary, makes appropriate referrals.
  • Mediates a range of student conflicts including roommate agreements and concerns.
  • Actively develops an environment, through dialogue and other educational means that encourages and fosters inclusive communities.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of residentially based learning communities assigned to their building or complex.
  • Works with specific learning community staff members to develop, implement, and attend Learning Community programs and Team Meetings.
  • Participates in all departmental trainings and debriefings, including participating on inclusion focused book reads, discussions, and activities.
Supervision:
  • Trains, supervises, and participates in the formal and informal evaluation process with anywhere from 8-21 student leaders in their assigned area and potentially a full-time professional Residence Hall Operations Coordinator.
  • Holds regular hall staff meetings to disseminate pertinent information and one-on-one meetings with Resident Advisors and Residence Hall Operations Coordinator.
Crisis Response and Student Conduct:
  • Communicates student’s rights and responsibilities and assists in adjudicating departmental and university code of conduct violations.
  • Provides staff coverage, including emergency duty, during the course of the year including hall openings, closing, and university vacation days.
  • Handles emergency situations utilizing crisis intervention skills and resources.
  • Serves in tier 1 on-call rotation with other Student Living staff. When on-call, the Residence Director is responsible for first-line response to 14,000+ students living on- and off-campus.
  • Refers students to additional University resources as necessary, including Barnes Center, Dean of Students Office, Hendricks Chapel, Housing Office, etc.
Managerial:
  • Ensures that the hall staff has an operating knowledge of the procedures, policies, and practices essential to the effective functioning of the hall.
  • Adheres to regular office hours (8:30 AM to 5:00 PM) as well as afterhours commitments such as programs, meetings, and training. This is a highly visible position and presence in the residence halls is expected.
  • Manages their hall/complex by conducting weekly walkthroughs of their building and follow up with maintenance and custodial concerns.
  • Manages the programming and operation budget for the hall and is an active participant in area meetings, departmental meetings and training programs.


Departmental Initiatives / Other duties as assigned:
  • Serves as a member or co-chair on departmental committees and will be assigned to work with one of three summer academic programs and/or summer school housing ( SSUI, Summer College, or Summer Start).
  • The Residence Director will perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Director and/or Student Living Leadership Team.
