Job Title:
Baruch College –
Assistant Professor Creative Writing - Journalism

Job Description:

The Department of Journalism and the Writing Professions at Baruch College, City University of New York, invites applications from experienced creative writers for a full-time, tenure-track position as an assistant professor, starting Sept. 1, 2023. The successful candidate will have several years’ experience as a professional creative writer, evidenced by published short work in recognized literary journals or other noted periodicals, or at least one book published by an established trade, independent, university or regional press. Proficiency in fiction-writing and one other creative-writing genre -- such as film writing, literary nonfiction, memoir, or fiction podcasting -- is required. We are not seeking a poet. The candidate is expected to remain active as a creative writer and publish regularly. In addition to teaching, candidates also must expect to be active and engaged in the life of the department and college and be prepared to take on a leadership role with respect to the creative writing specialization. Proven commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity is a must.

The journalism major at Baruch includes specializations in Journalism and Creative Writing, and Business Journalism. Baruch College is in Manhattan’s vibrant Gramercy Park neighborhood. It is easily reached from the city’s other boroughs and New Jersey by car and public transportation. Its buildings include the 1929 Field Building and the modern Newman Vertical Campus completed in 2001. The College is nationally recognized for academic excellence, access and value, and social mobility for students. For more information about the College, the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, and the Department, visit the Baruch website: https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/ .

Baruch College is strongly committed to a diverse work environment. Our student body is one of the most diverse in the nation, bringing an unparalleled breadth of cultural experience to the campus that enriches teaching, scholarship, and student life. A vibrant and pluralistic community is fundamental to the exchange of ideas and production of knowledge. Ensuring such plurality and diversity in the faculty is fostered by active efforts in recruitment and retention and in the sustaining of a climate of openness and participation throughout the life of the college.
