To provide academic advising, guidance, and support to students throughout the first year of study towards full transition into an academic college.

As part of a holistic, coordinated care model, the advisor will utilize proactive academic advising strategies toward goals of student retention, persistence, accomplishment, and success.

First Year Advisors hired into the Student Success Hub will be supporting one of several designed “Clusters” themed around specific career areas. (Areas include: Arts, Business, Education, Healthcare, Liberal Arts, STEM, (Science / Engineering / Technology / Math).

Applicants selected for the interview process will be provided an opportunity to share career areas that interest them; however, a key focus of the search committee for all First Year Advisor positions will be the common interest in supporting all first-year students at the university.

Applicants do not need to have a background in a specific content area to apply or to be selected for a specific cluster, and comprehensive onboarding and training will be provided to selected applicants. Primary Responsibilities
First Year Advisors will work with a focused population of first-year students under the general supervision of the Director of the First Year Student Success Hub and the daily supervision of the Associate Director of the First Year Student Success Hub.

First Year Advisors have some latitude on advising appointments but are tasked with objectives that are achieved through student-centered and proactive advising approaches designed to foster student success.

Objectives include:
  • Supporting the transition of first-year students from various backgrounds, starting at the point of admission to the university through the end of their first year

  • Providing onboarding assistance through the new student orientation process

  • Advising for course selection and scheduling

  • Following up with at-risk students

  • Assisting with the planning and delivery of academic support programs

  • Creating student success strategies and outreach

  • Implementing the office’s assessment plan for advising student learning outcomes

  • Making appropriate referrals

  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date student records
Advising caseloads will be roughly 150-200 students to allow for personalized support while utilizing resources from the Student Success Hub and campus resources to provide centralized support and coordinated care.

The position will include the teaching of a UNV 101 course for first-year students, to allow for student connection and support, and will be supported by an NKU Peer Coach. (Current NKU students hired to provide peer mentoring). First Year Advisors will work as part of a team model within their cluster which includes a Peer Coach, a Career Peer Coach, (focused on career services support), potential faculty mentors, and other support personnel to support each NKU student in the cluster.

Each academic-themed cluster will also be supported by a Senior Advisor, who will serve as a liaison to the Advising Center or advising unit within each college related to the cluster theme, and partner with the First Year Advisor to support the caseload of students within the cluster.

Participation in university-sponsored professional development programs, the National Academic Advising Association ( NACADA ), and the Kentucky Academic Advising Association are encouraged. Qualifications
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications are a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of two years of student support or experience in a higher education setting.

Preferred qualifications are a Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Counseling, Communication, Education, or other academic discipline with experience in academic advising. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate the ability to articulate an understanding of student development theory, experience working with diverse and underrepresented student populations. Other experiences could include working with first-year students, first-generation students, transfer students, and other unique populations.

Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and exceptional communication skills are required. Ability to work with diverse populations, strong teamwork skills, and ability to handle multiple tasks are also required.
