Job Details

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF PSYCHOLOGY – DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY: The Department of Psychology at Union College, Schenectady, New York, seeks an excellent scholar specializing in developmental psychology. Our new colleague will offer our 200-level developmental psychology course, our 400-level seminar in developmental psychology, and other speciality courses within developmental psychology. An ability to teach statistics and introductory psychology would also be helpful. We expect that our new colleague will establish and maintain a high-quality research program that involves our undergraduate students. PhD by appointment date preferred.

We welcome applicants with any subspecialty within developmental psychology, but we would be especially interested in scholars who study phenomena related to cultural differences, racial inequality, or under-resourced communities.  The College and department provide generous sabbaticals and outstanding research support, including competitive startup funds, ongoing internal funding opportunities for both faculty and student research, and EEG and eye-tracking equipment within the department.

Union College recognizes the rich possibilities of interdisciplinary studies. The Psychology department currently provides support for the Gender Sexuality and Women’s Studies and Neuroscience programs. Candidates who can support these and/or other Interdisciplinary Studies programs such as Africana Studies, including those with community-engagement interests, are encouraged to apply.

Teaching load is two courses per ten-week trimester, six courses per academic year. The College offers extensive resources for teaching development; faculty receive a one-course reduction in their first year.

Founded in 1795, Union College is a small, selective, private college with a history of excellence in the liberal arts, sciences, and engineering. Both the College and the department take great pride in offering our students rigorous and engaging learning experiences and the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research.

The College is located in New York’s Capital Region, a metropolitan area of over one million people. Our region offers affordable, livable neighborhoods and a variety of interesting cultural and recreational opportunities. In addition, both New York City and Boston are located within a three-hour drive from campus.

Union College is an equal opportunity employer and strongly committed to student and workforce diversity. Increasing diversity on campus is a critical priority for Union, one that is integral to our mission of preparing students for a globally interconnected world. Our goal is not only to increase diversity, but to support a diverse environment in which people from varied backgrounds can succeed and thrive. As such, we welcome applications from members of traditionally underrepresented groups. Applicants are encouraged to state in their cover letter how they will enhance the diversity of offerings and educational experiences if hired. We value and are committed to a host of diverse populations and cultures including, but not limited to, those based on race, religion, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, national origin and veteran status. Union College is committed to providing access and will provide reasonable accommodation in its application process to individuals with disabilities who request such accommodations.

We will begin reviewing applications on September 16, 2022, and will continue until the position is filled. We ask that candidates submit the following via our portal at https://jobs.union.edu: (1) an application letter, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) statements of teaching and research interests, (4) evidence of teaching effectiveness including any course evaluations and peer evaluations that are available, (5) evidence of scholarship including copies of peer-reviewed publications, and (6) a statement describing experience working with diverse student populations and/or the ability to contribute to a diverse community. Questions may be directed to George Bizer, chair of the search committee, at bizerg@union.edu.
