SkillSet is an evolving community based outreach and skills building program at STEAM Studio, UNC Asheville's 12,000 square foot state-of-the-art making space. The program is designed to create access to the tool and material literacy that is foundational to maker-based STEAM education. From computer aided drafting to power tools and CNC machining students learn design, development, iteration, engineering, craft, and the science behind it all. SkillSet's mission is to eliminate gender, socioeconomic, and ability based barriers to STEAM education. The employee in this role should be able to create inclusive and accessible programming for diverse students and staff.

The SkillSet Coordinator serves as a bridge between STEAM Studio and our Western North Carolina community. They will manage all aspects of programming including continued support and development of classes for girls and non-binary kids, workshops for adults and co-ed k-12 after school and summer camp programs both onsite at STEAM Studio and at offsite locations. This role will be charged with growing SkillSet through engagement with community partners and K-12 schools.

In addition to developing and teaching workshops, afterschool programming and summer camps, the SkillSet Coordinator will work with the Director of STEAM Studio to identify and apply for grants and other funding opportunities, manage class budgets, purchase tools and materials and help maintain studio equipment and organization. The employee in this position may have teaching or co-teaching responsibilities of up to 3 classes per academic year for UNC Asheville classes that connect to the mission and delivery of the SkillSet program.
