Position Title: Assistant Professor of Public Health (tenure track) in Social Epidemiology 

 

Job Description: 

The Department of Public Health at Santa Clara University (SCU), a Jesuit, Catholic university, is seeking applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor faculty position with expertise in the area of social epidemiology. We seek a colleague with research and teaching interests in epidemiology with an emphasis on the social determinants of health. Substantive areas of interest could include a range of topics, such as chronic disease, early life adversity, infectious disease risk, environmental health, global health, mental health, access to health care, or other related areas. 

Candidates must have a strong commitment to both teaching and research, and be able to establish an active research program involving undergraduate students. 

The successful candidate will teach both lower-division and upper-division courses, but in particular will teach an upper division Epidemiology course with a computer lab to majors, minors and interested students in other departments.

Located in the heart of northern California’s Silicon Valley, SCU is a private, Catholic Jesuit liberal arts university committed to promoting social justice in a comprehensive educational setting. This position is 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service. A full-time teaching load is six courses per year on a quarter system (typically 2/2/2). Housing assistance is available. 

Basic Qualifications: Doctoral degree in epidemiology or a related field, or a medical degree and graduate level training in epidemiology or public health (PhD or DrPH), prior teaching experience, and a record of active research.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  1. Training in social epidemiological theories and methods
  2. Expertise in epidemiology, population health, demography, working with large epidemiological data sets, or conducting community or clinical intervention research
  3. Clinic or community-involved research addressing social determinants of health and health equity
  4. Inclusive pedagogy geared toward undergraduate education
  5. External funding to support research activities, or the potential for external funding

 

Responsibilities: Tenure track faculty at SCU are teaching scholars who are expected to balance teaching, research and service. This is an in-person position. More specifically, duties include but are not limited to:

 

TEACHING

 

1. Teach lower- and upper-division courses in the major and university core curriculum, as assigned by the chair.  SCU is on the quarter system and a typical load is two courses per quarter. Teaching responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

a.     Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively.

b.    Assigning and evaluating written work, projects, and exams that align with course or core learning objectives and providing timely feedback to students.

c.    Holding weekly office hours at times reasonably convenient to students.

d.    Assigning and submitting student grades that are appropriate, accurate, and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline.

e.    Administering numerical and narrative evaluations in each section for all courses.

2.  Develop and teach courses that contribute to curriculum development in the relevant degree program and/or the university core.  Faculty teaching university core courses should follow an approved syllabus or work with the chair to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.

3.  Participate in assessment of student learning for courses in the department.

4.  Provide informed advice and mentoring to undergraduate students. 

5.  Fulfill other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or by the Chair of the Public Health Department.

 

RESEARCH

1. Develop a research program at SCU that will result in the publication of peer-reviewed publications, monographs, and/or creative work per the department scholarship standards. 

2. Preference will be given to candidates with a research program that can accommodate participation of undergraduates.

 

SERVICE

1. Provide effective service to the Department of Public Health, the College, the University and profession through contributions other than teaching and scholarship such as service on committees, participation in professional organizations and activities, and community service performed by virtue of professional expertise or association with the university as appropriate to rank and experience.

  7. Two examples of scholarly work
  8. Graduate transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable at this stage)
