Assistant Professor of Communication/Media Ethics & Law

 

The Department of Communication at Denison University invites applications for a full time,

tenure track assistant professor to teach in media studies with an emphasis on ethics, law and

policy around media institutions and practices. An ideal candidate's teaching and research will

demonstrate awareness of media technologies (including but not limited to digital media) with a

critical approach to examining ethical, political, and governmental influences on power and

justice in the mediated realm. Intersections of the above with race, gender, sexuality, disability

and/or class are particularly desirable. Qualified candidates should demonstrate experience

teaching media studies from a critical cultural perspective. Candidates are required to have a

Ph.D. by start date preferably in Communication. (ABD will be considered as Instructor until

Ph.D. is attained.) Prior teaching experience in Media Studies is ideal.

 

An ideal candidate’s background should demonstrate their ability to offer a range of courses

which may include Media Ethics, Ethics and Society, Media Theory, Freedom of Speech, Media

Structures, Communication Law, The Trouble with Normal, Racialized Perspectives of Media,

Mediating Gender and Sexuality as well as courses in their specific area of expertise. (Interested

We will prioritize candidates who evidence a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring

students and who demonstrate prior experience in teaching media-related courses. Successful

candidates will demonstrate an understanding of communication as constitutive and thus be

expected to contribute to the teaching of the core courses in the department, Theorizing

Communication and Research in Communication. We also value candidates who demonstrate

interest in contributing to the Journalism major and other interdisciplinary programs such as

International Studies, Black Studies, and Women and Gender Studies. The teaching load is five

courses of approximately 24 students each per year. The teaching load is five courses of

approximately 24 students each per year. Tenure track faculty members are expected to maintain a scholarly/research program that leads to peer reviewed results. In addition, they are expected to do service at the departmental and college level. The appointment begins
August 2023.
