Job Description:

Coordinate research studies and demonstrations for invasive plant management in fresh water, wetland, and upland ecosystems and in controlled experimental mesocosms under the advisement of a UF/IFAS research team. These efforts will require the individual to perform the following functions:
  • Knowledge and skills in herbicide applications for aquatic, wetland, and upland plant management, knowledge of plant species identification, assessment of plant communities, experimental design, statistical analysis, and establishment and maintenance of field research.
  • Safe and independent airboat and prop boat operation, towing, maintenance, with the ability to navigate to research plots, often in remote locations, for biological surveys and environmental sampling. Conduct sampling associated with both small-scale and large-scale operational herbicide treatments. This will include collection of water samples, plant samples, and soil samples for multiple projects that are being conducted throughout the state. In preparing a boat for towing, deploying equipment, and collecting samples, the applicant will be required to lift 50 to 100 lbs.
  • Operation of multiple UAS platforms and other IoT technologies for capture of spatio-temporal data with high resolution and frequency. Familiarity with and capability of calibrating, deploying and utilizing field equipment such as YSI multimeters, Hydrolabs, Turner Fluorometers, PAM fluorometers, Lowrance HDS recording fathometers, and light meters in conjunction with both large and small-scale studies.
  • Able to procure and archive large data from original sources and the public domain for analysis and publication. Proficient use of GIS, remote sensing and statistical software for planning and analyses of field research.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills including delivery of extension presentations to diverse audiences, preparation of fact sheets, peer reviewed journal articles, and popular press articles.
Expected Salary:

$52,500 - $59,262 annually, commensurate with qualifications.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related field and seven years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree in biology or a closely related field and five years of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field and two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in airboat operation and maintenance is strongly desired. Safe Boating and FWC or US Army Corps of Engineer Airboat operator certificates are desired.
  • Part 107 certification for legal operation of UAS
  • Experience as a licensed restricted use aquatic and natural area pesticide applicator is desired.
  • Experience working as a member of a research team in an invasive plant related field is desired.
  • Experience in upland, wetland, and aquatic plant management in the State of Florida.
  • Knowledge in satellite and aerial remote sensing imagery and GIS
