DEPARTMENT: Information Technology Services

BASIC FUNCTION: Fairfield University needs a talented, hands-on Software Development Manager to join the Enterprise Computing team within ITS. This person will manage a small team of developers while also creating custom applications. The Software Development Manager will work with a team of analysts, developers, database administrators, network & system administrators, and our security team to use technology to solve our most pressing business and academic challenges. Sometimes this means creating new custom web applications, sometimes it means integration 3rd party tools with the rest of our ecosystem, and sometimes it means extending the functionality of our student information system (Banner) or our ERP (Workday). It always means providing an exceptional level of customer service, tracking and reporting status accurately, and working effectively in teams and on your own. You should be a self-starter, willing to anticipate the next thing that needs to be done and doing it without having to be told. You are never satisfied with the status quo, believing there’s always room for improvement and you are naturally curious and eager to learn new skills. It is essential that you can take a partially conceived idea with poorly defined requirements and turn it into a finished product that gets delivered on time and on budget. The Software Development Manager will be the primary technical expert on application development using approved technologies (currently Vue.Js, Springboot, SQL, Grails, and Oracle) to build and deploy applications to Microsoft Azure.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, & EXPERIENCE NEEDED: The right candidate for this job has previous experience juggling multiple projects with competing timelines and priorities. A minimum of 3 years of prior experience developing Java based applications is required and a degree in IT, Computer Science, or a related field is preferred. A strong knowledge of software development principles, SDLC, agile methodologies, DevOps, and familiarity with modern application development technologies. The ideal candidate has experience building and deploying applications to Microsoft Azure using Azure DevOps tools. Prior experience managing other developers is necessary. Prior experience working in a higher education environment is a plus.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Lead Application Development team to build scalable, reliable, and secure custom applications to meet the needs of our faculty, staff, and students Build and maintain custom applications using Vue.Js, Springboot, SQL, and other associated technology Build and maintain CI/CD pipeline with public cloud provider tools (AWS, Azure, GCP) Aid IT Leadership team in defining the vision and roadmap for software development and data warehouse at Fairfield University. Work with other developers and IT Analysts to gather requirements, design a solution, document development sprints, plan testing, and commit to go-live events; involve all relevant stakeholders and ensure technical feasibility and resource availability to meet objectives. Build and maintain integrations to 3rd party tools in a secure, reliable, and scalable manner Conduct coaching, mentoring, and performance management of other developers within ITS Research new and innovative software and tools to help solve problems for ITS and other University Departments. Ensure that all projects are delivered on-time, within scope and within budget; ensure that project status is tracked and reported appropriately Manage project risks and escalate those risks to management in a timely manner. Develop risk mitigations strategies Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
