Job Summary:

This position will support the daily operational and experimental demand of the Swine Research and Teaching Center (SRTC) in the Dept. of Animal & Dairy Sciences from approximately 15 PI's and 3,000 research animals annually, including conducting research for external companies, School of Medicine & Public Health, among other groups. This is an exceptional position for a research professional that appreciates facilitating successful swine experimental projects, both agricultural and biomedical, and the complexities of a dynamic operation. The position requires a self-motivated and detail-oriented person to support the intricacies of several simultaneous projects. The ideal candidate will have experience with research facilities, data collection, statistical analysis, electronic databases, surgical procedures, and anesthesia. Must be able to troubleshoot and independently resolve issues, and work as an integral part of a team. Excellent written and oral communication skills, consistent attention to detail in performing duties in accordance with standard operating procedures and protocols, and strong organizational skills are required.

-Collaborate with the Principal Investigator to facilitate experiments at SRTC or other campus facility, if needed. Identify appropriate staff needs, provide hands on oversight of project and monitoring of animals, and collect data.
- Review protocols, identify and work out intricate details, and assist in modifications. Provide regular updates to the research group and veterinarians on project progress/results. Serve as a facility & general swine expert to offer suggestions or improvements to project design.
-For necessary surgical procedures: maintaining proper surgical records, administering and monitoring anesthesia, recovering animals, and/or training other staff/students in anesthesia, surgical records, and recovery.
-Develop project budgets, expense tracking, and timely invoicing to research groups
-Oversee the surgery suite; ensure the room, equipment, medications, supplies, etc. are up to standard for use and inspections.
-Place project supply and drug orders to prepare for projects according to protocol
-Perform quality assurance reviews of data collections and entries
-Set up animal rooms and arrange animal spacing for projects, handle animals, and uphold biosecurity protocols
-Participate in tours, education, and training of general swine procedures and handling
-Maintain treatment records, provide guidance on animal treatments, partake in developing vaccination plans, when needed, along with a herd health serology plan, including collecting necessary samples.

Responsibilities:

Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.
  • 50% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 20% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 5% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 5% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 10% Performs daily animal husbandry chores, assumes responsibility for daily operation of unit in absence of supervisors, carries out various tasks such as handling, weighing, sorting, loading, and vaccinating
  • 10% Monitors health of all animals, maintains treatment methods and records according to Standard Operating Procedures, researcher, or veterinarian directive, develops vaccination & herd serology plan

Qualifications:

Either a minimum of 1 year of undergraduate animal research experience as part of a Bachelors program or a minimum of 2 years of prior animal research experience.

License/Certification:

Preferred
CVT - Certified Veterinary Technician

Additional Information:

This position will be scheduled to work 40 hours per week with the intended schedule of Monday through Friday, 7:00AM-4:00PM. Rotating Holidays and Weekend hours. Occasional early and late hours needed for research projects.

Requirements: Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Position requires walking/standing 70% of the time and frequent bending and twisting. Must be able to respond quickly to actions of 100 -700-pound animals to prevent accidents. Physical ability to lift, sit, stand, bend, reach, squat, twist, and push to safely handle and care for the animals. Research animal experience is needed for the posted position with preference of knowledge and experience in surgical procedures.
