UW BOTHELL AND CASCADIA COLLEGE CAMPUS LIBRARY

The UW Bothell and Cascadia College Campus Library is uniquely positioned as a key resource in supporting the teaching, learning, and research needs of both the UW Bothell and Cascadia College communities. As part of the University of Washington Libraries system, the UW Bothell and Cascadia College Campus Library serves Cascadia College and the University of Washington Bothell, with a combined FTE of 8,500 students.

The Campus Library is a critical partner in fostering collaboration across this shared campus environment, through access, collections, consultations, digital scholarship support, events, instruction, reference, services, and technology. THE POSITION

The University of Washington Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean of Libraries and Director of the UW Bothell and Cascadia College Library. This is an exceptional opportunity to shape major programs, strategic directions, and service initiatives at one of the nation’s premier academic libraries. Under the general direction of the Dean of University Libraries, the Associate Dean and Director is responsible for strategic visioning, policy and program development, operations and personnel, and overall innovation and excellence in the UW Bothell and Cascadia College Library. The Associate Dean and Director provides leadership for transformational and user-centered services; integrated educational and curricular programs; staff development at all levels; an inclusive environment that also prioritizes equity and diversity; responsive collections and information resources; assessment; and marketing of services. The Associate Dean and Director works closely with the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and members of the Deans Council at UW Bothell, as well as the Vice President for Student Success and Student Learning, Cascadia College, and Cascadia College administrative teams to foster and maintain effective cross-campus communication and coordination. The Associate Dean and Director builds strong collaborative leadership relationships across the University of Washington Libraries tri-campus environment.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Establishes, develops, and implements effective library staff, budgets, services, collections, and programs in support of curricula and research.
  • Creates and maintains accountability relationships with campus and community partners to ensure that the Campus Library supports a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace environment for all staff, and that all library services are accessible to a diverse community of users.
  • Works closely with the Dean of University Libraries and members of Libraries Cabinet to maintain awareness of University Libraries issues. Keeps UW Bothell and Cascadia College Library staff informed about University Libraries policies, plans, priorities, and activities.
  • Collaborates with the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and members of the Deans Council at UW Bothell, as well as the Vice President for Student Success and Student Learning, Cascadia College, and Cascadia College administrative teams to foster and maintain effective cross-campus communication and coordination.
  • Works closely with colleagues across the UW Libraries to ensure the successful implementation of the One Library, Three Campuses policy on cross-campus services.
  • Prepares annual budget requests, and monitors University of Washington Bothell and Cascadia College Library budget allocations and expenditures.
  • Directs recruitment, onboarding, and retention of all staff and hourly employees; hires, supervises, and evaluates staff.
  • Actively participates in strategic planning and development for University Libraries; the University of Washington Bothell Library; and the University of Washington Bothell/Cascadia College co-located campus.
  • Participates in the management of UW Bothell and Cascadia College as a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet, Academic Council, and Academic Affairs Leadership Council.
  • Participates in the management of Cascadia College as a member of the President’s advisory group.
  • In consultation with the Dean of University Libraries and the Vice-President for Student Learning and Success, negotiates changes to the MOU for library services with Cascadia College.
  • Communicates appropriately, effectively, and positively. Plays an active role in staying informed and participating in Libraries and unit meetings, activities, and events. Is familiar with and understands the UW Libraries Personal Communication Responsibility Guidelines.
  • Assumes responsibilities as assigned; performs other duties as required.
RANK

BENEFITS

Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan on a matching basis. This is a full-time, 12-month appointment. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 26 working days per year. Sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax.

SALARY

Minimum starting salary $120,000 for Associate Librarian rank. Salary commensurate with qualifications, rank, and experience.

ANTICIPATED START DATE

While we hope to fill the position by Fall 2022, we are happy to work with the successful candidate to explore opportunities for an earlier or later start date.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.
  • Demonstrated history of action in addressing systemic issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion, and increasing workplace diversity and retention of diverse staff.
  • At least five years of successful library experience including leadership experience in an academic library setting; proven track record of innovation and new program implementation; and understanding of the multi-faceted roles of libraries in higher education and the broader community.
  • Excellent knowledge of current issues and opportunities for enhancing the role of libraries in research, teaching, and learning; experience in the provision of onsite, distributed, and digital services; understanding of current trends and changes in higher education; and demonstrated understanding of the role of grants, fundraising, and donor relations in libraries.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a collaborative management environment and to function effectively as a member of a strong leadership team; excellent interpersonal skills; and engaged commitment to organization development and mentoring. High level of energy, creativity, and affinity for productive ambiguity, and ability to foster collaborative attitudes within the groups of units managed and between those units and units managed by others.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience and/or demonstrated interest in planning, construction, and/or renovation of libraries.
  • Familiarity with assessment and evaluation methods; motivated for creative, energetic, innovative, and on-going assessment of services, collections, facilities, and policies.
  • Ability to advocate and engage diverse stakeholders, and have inclusive and culturally competent communication skills. Ability to engender partnerships and represent both the University Libraries and the UW Bothell and Cascadia College Library in a variety of venues.
  • Evidence of exemplary leadership and influence as demonstrated with a strong record of research, publication, and professional contributions.
