Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Assistant to the Faculty position. The Assistant to the Faculty is a part-time (20 hours per week), term-limited position, ending on May 31, 2023 (with no anticipated renewal), starting at $21.50/hour - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Assistant to the Faculty supports the administration of the Departments of Anthropology and Sociology and American Studies. They help develop, organize, and promote events and other departmental programming geared toward building community amongst a highly diverse group of students, staff, faculty, and alumni, and engaging the broader campus community. They provide necessary course preparation support. They help ensure the efficient operation of the department office by serving as a point of contact for the department, managing daily business, maintaining resources and records, and working towards an inclusive culture for all. They support smooth administration of the department by collaborating with other offices, scheduling business, and supporting faculty in their course preparation needs. They also help organize visitors hosted by the department and course fieldtrips. The Assistant to the Faculty is a public face of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology and American Studies and should foster a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming environment via daily interaction with diverse members of the College community.

Summary of Responsibilities

Programming and Major Support
  • Help develop, organize, and promote departmental programming that communicates the work of the department, builds community amongst our diverse students, staff, and faculty, and maintains relationships with alumni
  • Support faculty in organizing events and hosting guest speakers
  • Provide information about the major in response to student or faculty inquiries
  • Maintain department webpage, department calendar; Collaborate with Office of Communication to advertise department events
  • Provide logistical support for American Studies and Anthropology and Sociology field trips, including reservation of vehicles and arrangements with museums and other venues.


Course Support
  • Process e-reserves, copyright clearance (permissions), book orders (and requesting desk copies from publishers), film streamings, and coursepack creation.
  • Assist with syllabi, coursepack creation, and photocopying.
  • Coordinate fieldtrips logistics, including vehicle reservations and ordering bag lunches from Valentine


Office and Administrative Support
  • Maintain department websites
  • Purchase supplies
  • Administrative support for individual faculty research as requested


Qualifications

Required:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 1 year of related experience
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Strong time management, organizational, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently and collaboratively with a diverse community
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and to contributing to an inclusive culture


Preferred:
  • Associate's Degree
