Job Description

The Assistant Director is responsible for performing a variety of business functions within the Provost Office’s Business Services Unit, such as: budgeting, financial planning, reconciliations, procurement, travel arrangements, reimbursements, fixed asset tracking, wage payroll, timeclock administration, and file maintenance. This position will primarily provide business/financial support to the Office of Inclusion & Diversity (OID), which leads, coordinates, and advises on the University’s distributed model of inclusion and diversity. OID also oversees the Student Opportunities and Achievement Resources (SOAR) program and the university’s Cultural and Community Centers; coordinates funding for the university’s Equity and Social Disparity for the Human Condition (ESDHC) Strategic Growth Area, and for faculty/staff caucuses. Additionally, the assistant director will provide guidance and supervision to a fiscal support staff.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or related field, with experience directly related or a Master's degree. Demonstrated understanding of government and nonprofit fund accounting concepts and generally accepted accounting principles. Experience in a financial role in higher education, with exposure to fund accounting, budgeting, payroll, funds handling, procurement, and accounts receivable. Demonstrated ability to work with, and in service of, a diverse workforce and student body. Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing. Experience with budget management development and analysis; strong office software skills such as accounting and data base management systems, spreadsheets, and word processing software.

Preferred Qualifications

Understanding of the budgeting process, main funding sources and the university financial structure. Experience using Excel and reporting tools such as Scoop, Micro-Strategy, or similar programs. Supervisory experience. Experience performing monthly fund reconciliations in Banner. Experience coordinating travel arrangements and processing travel authorizations in the university’s ChromeRiver system. Experience processing procurement requests utilizing the HokieMart system or the university’s purchasing card.
