Job Description Summary

Under general supervision, respond to fire alarm complaints and alarms; make repairs as necessary. Review building FA systems to upgrade, improve performance and dependability. Assess and recommend component and/or system replacements. Oversee FA vendor presence on campus. Perform other duties as assigned. Position expectation: 15% office/85% field work

Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoot, identify and correct field problems in the various campus fire alarm systems.
  • Review FA alarm histories and follow to underlying issue.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, replace building fire alarm system components using appropriate tools, testing instruments and procedures.
  • Monitor hardware inventory to ensure adequate parts supply for campus need. Research and estimate materials required for specific projects. Work with parts depot to maintain parts inventory. Research non-stock items as needed.
  • Review pertinent codes and regulations for campus FA systems. Correct minor problems and notify administration on major concerns.
  • In conjunction with supervisor, research and attend appropriate training opportunities pertaining to the trade and code requirements.
  • Complete and maintain all necessary paperwork and records as required by department. Maintain clean job site throughout duration and clean up job site following work completion. Maintain safe working conditions for self and others. Ensure proper storage of supplies, tools and equipment.
  • Work with external contractors to provide support; review and approve contractor-installed repairs as requested.
  • Serve as after-hours responder within the department’s on-call rotation.
  • Ensure all jobs are compliant with university policy, state, local and federal laws.
  • Respond to various trouble/supervisory alarms to reduce campus distraction and assess root problem.
  • Respond to alarm and trouble issues with campus burglar alarms and panic alarms.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including but not limited to:
  • Participate in the annual residence hall turnover activities.
  • Serve as technical and/or labor support for selected campus events.
  • Assist other trades during specific peak workloads or emergencies, including rain-related incidents.
Required Qualifications
  • A high school diploma plus a minimum of three year FA field experience.
  • Demonstrated work experience in maintenance and repair of fire alarm systems.
  • Proven ability to read and understand FA specifications and schematic diagrams.
  • Proven ability to use appropriate tools and diagnostic equipment to repair, install, replace and test electrical circuits and components.
  • Technical skills to learn and use computerized databases and systems needed for the position.
  • Organizational skills to prioritize work requests and ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Familiarity with city and state building codes, OSHA rules and regulations, standard safety practices and equipment and other requirements for workplace safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to safe working practices as defined by industry and regulatory standards.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply safe driving practices as defined by California DMV .
  • Ability to work in a variety of physical environments including on ladders, man-lifts etc. with heights of up to 30 feet.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English in order to communicate with all levels of campus community and business contacts.
  • Ability to understand and apply policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere.
Desired Qualifications
  • Completion of an apprenticeship program or technical school course of study.
  • Successful completion of one or more state certifications.

On-call rotation duties
Positions that require employee to be available during on-call shifts.

Different work shifts Standard hours of the university are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Please list work schedule if different: Facilities standard shift, 7 am-4 pm. Ability to respond to on-call emergencies during non-business hours.

Some evening and weekend work hours
