Assistant General Counsel (Generalist)
About the Opportunity
The Office of the General Counsel at Northeastern University seeks a full-time attorney to provide support for the university and its various campuses, colleges, and departments in numerous and varied legal matters. Subject-matter responsibilities will be broad and general in nature and may depend on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. Areas in which the successful candidate may practice include faculty affairs, student affairs and student experience, employment, student discipline, academic appeals, Title IX, contracts, business and regulatory matters. Additional areas may include research, gifts/donations, and policy design and implementation, The attorney will perform activities related to all aspects of litigation in state and federal court as well as administrative agencies. The attorney will work closely with, accept direction from, and collaborate successfully with senior attorneys, including the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel. Designation as Assistant or Associate University Counsel is dependent on relevant experience, skills and qualifications.
Provide the minimum knowledge and skills required to competently perform the job as well as how they are normally acquired through education, training and/or experience (i.e., Knowledge of…..; ability to…..; as normally acquired through a…. degree and ___ years of experience.):
The successful candidate will have 5 or more years of progressively sophisticated experience in all facets of general litigation, employment, student affairs, non-profit law, and/or aligned areas of law.
- A J.D. degree from an accredited law school.
- Admission to practice law in Massachusetts and a member of the
Bar in good standing.
- At least 3 or more years of progressively sophisticated
experience in litigation in a law firm and/or in-house.
- Prior in-house experience, particularly in higher education,
non-profit or governmental institutions is preferred.
- Civil trial experience
- Experience conducting and responding to written discovery
requests and drafting legal pleadings including summary judgement
and other motions.
- Experience taking and defending depositions.
- Deep knowledge of and familiarity with the rules of civil
procedure of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Federal
Rules of Civil procedure.
- Experience in legal research, writing, analysis and
reasoning;
- Experience conducting and directing internal investigations of
alleged discrimination, harassment, retaliations, and other civil
rights-related claims.

Provide excellent legal advice and offer proactive and creative solutions to resolve legal, procedural, or administrative issues in compliance with all applicable legal standards across broad practice areas, including student affairs, faculty affairs, employment, business affairs, contracts, and policy. Perform activities related to litigation in state and federal court as well as administrative agencies, including drafting pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, and legal briefs, and representing the university at depositions, hearings, and trials. Supervise the work of outside counsel. -60%
Conduct legal research and provide analysis, written and oral advice, and training as needed to keep the university and the members of the university community
apprised of legal developments and current on laws and regulations affecting assigned areas. -20%
Negotiate, draft, administer, advise on and interpret a broad variety of contracts, including licensing agreements, leases, and other legal instruments memorializing the diverse activities of a large dynamic academic organization, including review of catalogues, addenda, and handbooks. -20%
