Position Focus:
The Associate Dean, Diversity & Inclusion Programs is responsible for managing the strategic deployment of resources and coordinating activities of the Chief Diversity Officer's (CDO's) office, including the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, Community and Equity (DICE). The Associate Dean will lead the efforts of the office to develop initiatives and strategies around diversity, equity, and inclusion for the Yale School of Medicine's Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) Program. The Associate Dean will recruit and present at national conferences and major professional association meetings (e.g., ABRCMS, SACNAS, etc.). The Associate Dean will initially manage a staff of six with the anticipation of future growth. Ability to travel to National recruitment events and conferences (minimum of four (4) trips per year) and ability to flex time and intermittently work nights and weekends.

Essential Duties:
SCHOOL OF MEDICINE DIVERSITY & INCLUSION PROGRAMS: 30% FTE1. Design and oversee the execution of initiatives and programs that impact diversity, equity and inclusion, and culture and climate across the Medical School.2. Direct the strategic allocation and deployment of resources in the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Manage the staff of both the Offices of DEI and DICE. Provide guidance and direction when needed to Office staff to ensure they are able to fulfill the missions of the offices.3. Represent the CDO in high profile and executive level meetings with YSM and university leaders, articulating perspectives and making decisions impacting the school.4. Develop and oversee the procurement of external speakers to support programs, events and initiatives related to improving and maintaining an inclusive and diverse environment. Negotiate deliverables.5. Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with minority serving institutions.6. Partner proactively, strategically, and collaboratively with key stakeholders (e.g. CDO, Student Affinity Groups, Faculty Affinity Groups (SWIM and MORE), Office for Graduate Student Development & Diversity, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, BBS Minority Affairs directors, Yale Ciencia program, YCCI and Training grant directors) on diversity matters.7. Working closely with the CDO, BBS Faculty leadership, Faculty Affinity group leadership (SWIM, MORE) and office staff, oversee the design of evaluation tools and metrics to assess the efficacy of all office programs and initiatives. Evaluate trends and identify areas of improvement. BBS PROGRAM RECRUITMENT, DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION RESPONSIBILITIES: 60% FTE1. Design and oversee the execution of self-initiated projects and initiatives to ensure recruitment and retention of underrepresented students in the BBS program. Develop, manage and implement new and additional programs and events, such as professional development, career building workshops, speaker series and other signature initiatives.2. Engage in recruitment activities for the BBS program, such as attending national recruiting conferences (e.g. ABRCMS, SACNAS,) and presenting workshops at conferences/meetings.3. Participate as a member of the BBS Executive Committee, communicating to the Executive Committee on the status of programs in development, areas identified as “need improvement” and other forward-looking initiatives.4. Develop evaluation tools and metrics (focus groups, surveys, etc.) for the BBS program and initiatives overseen by the office. Evaluate trends and identify areas for improvement to continually improve programming, services, and retention.5. Guide strategic development of programs and initiatives that benefit marginalized communities.6. Work closely with the CDO and BBS faculty leadership to develop BBS program outcome reports. Work with program directors for submission of NIH and NSF grant renewals. FUNDING/GRANT SUPPORT ACTIVITIES: 10% FTE1. Identify funding opportunities; apply for grant support or other funding as appropriate to develop and support programs and services to enhance diversity and inclusion.2. Assist BBS faculty mentors in grant preparation by providing data and information about diversity and inclusion, outcome measures and other diversity-related metrics needed for their grant applications.

Required Education and Experience:
1. Master’s Degree in Business or Science and ten years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.2. Experience managing, mentoring staff and/or trainees.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated supervisory and employee relations experience which includes mentoring and training of staff and trainees

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated program development, management and evaluation experience for new and existing academic, career and networking programs or related areas.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook and other related software programs.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Excellent oral, written and presentation skills.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Strong analytical, research and organizational skills with the ability to manage decision making for multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced work environment.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
PhD preferred. Experience working with diverse communities and running pipeline programs.
