Job Description:

Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Student Life (SLSVP), this position will serve as a senior advisor to the SLSVP and as a member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT). At the direction of the SLSVP and in partnership with the AVP of Operations, the position sets priorities, gives direction and advances success metrics that align with Student Life impact and growth goals.

 

Drives design and implementation of Student Life’s strategy framework and resulting strategic plans, metrics and goals; refines Student Life’s strategy, including oversight of related implementation planning and execution initiatives; develops and oversees implementation of an annual planning process and program evaluation (via supervision of the Center for the Study of Student Life); tracks, monitors and ensures progress of pilots and other key program and partnership innovations (in concert with Student Life’s Strategic Projects Manager, Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and FOCUS Team); partner with Student Life’s Marketing and Communications and Development teams, including area senior leaders, to enhance Student Life’s profile and build productive internal and external partnerships.

 

The AVP will steward the Student Life strategic plan by putting it into action and by managing, overseeing, advancing, and monitoring progress of key programs that support Student Life’s vision for impact with a human-centered focus. As Student Life’s primary strategy officer, will ensure alignment of programs and departmental outcomes with Student Life’s strategic plan and organizational effectiveness goals. The successful candidate will also develop and lead programs, ideas and strategies to advance Student Life’s thought leadership and position the organization as a leading voice on the outcomes and impact Student Life has on the student experience.

 

The AVP will be an outcome driven, data-informed, resourceful, results-oriented and strategic leader who has a professional passion for the value of higher education and the advancement of the student experience; the social acumen to center equity and inclusion; and the proven ability to work collaboratively. The AVP will cultivate and maintain key external stakeholder relationships; and help drive Student Life’s growth, productivity and advancement enterprise and student life goals.

 

The AVP must have a demonstrated expertise in working collaboratively across units and senior leadership to drive success. The successful AVP will be an innovative and strategic thinker with an open and collaborative style of leadership and management that fosters teamwork, sustains a learning environment for staff and supports a dedicated, results-oriented team that earns the trust of the university community.

Performance Objectives:

The AVP effectively develops, manages, utilizes and ensures accountability for all supporting department budgets; cultivates, nurtures and sustains relationships and partnerships within Student Life and across the campus community, and beyond, that advances an extraordinary experience and supports student success; collaborates with other Student Life leaders to champion the vision and goals of the Senior Vice President for Student Life. The AVP will create and realize the vision for Student Life’s strategy framework, strategic planning and projecting processes, including goal and metrics tracking, outcome achievement and assessment activities. The AVP will leverage and advance partnerships with colleagues in Academic Affairs and individual colleges with an ultimate goal of creating a seamless, comprehensive and collaborative curricular/co-curricular platform and experience.  The AVP develops and manages an annual operating budget of approximately $2.5 million and is responsible for (50) full-time staff, including (4) direct reports, as well as (75) student staff.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Core responsibilities and ultimate goals include but are not limited to:
  • Facilitate, coordinate, and ensure the creation and delivery of strategy framework, strategic plans, and strategic outcomes
  • Ensure successful, consistent execution of strategy, including the need for future adaptation
  • Strengthen Student Life’s approach to innovation and digital learning and support
  • Actively engage and/or grow division, university, local, state, and national collaboration, and partnerships
  • Responsible for collaboration with AVP for Operations on all high-profile meeting preparation, reports, and presentations

 

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have demonstrated, progressively responsible leadership or management roles in business, higher education, or relevant fields (10+ years), as well as the demonstrated ability to lead, develop and apply best practices to a large comprehensive program. The position requires a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in business administration, or in a relevant business-related field, and/or comparable education, experience, and degrees in higher education with training in student affairs or industry (doctoral degree may be considered a bonus, depending on other experience). The successful candidate will possess proactive leadership skills including strategic planning and organizational prioritizing; strong financial and budget management skills; and supervisory skills which inspire, motivate, and foster a culture in which all staff members are treated with respect, fairness, equity, and professionalism and which promotes professional development across all members of the team.

 

The successful candidate will have significant experience in and knowledge of strategic frameworks and planning at multiple levels of an organization (enterprise, office, department, etc.); metrics development and tracking; organizational effectiveness; data use and analysis; and statistical analysis.

 

The successful candidate will also possess a strong understanding of the value of partnerships, ability to identify trends and current and emerging needs of constituents and will recognize the value of the student academic experience related to admission, retention, and graduation. Additionally, the successful candidate will possess the ability to challenge the status quo; the desire to continually improve an already high-functioning organization; a strong vision that promotes innovation, strategic thinking, and high levels of collaboration; and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion reflected in both staff supervision and student programs/services. Extensive experience in the use of data and assessments to make decisions and to initiate and adapt to change; the ability to represent the Office of Student Life and effectively communicate with university leadership, faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders.
