POSITION AND AVAILABILITY : Nine month, non-tenure track and not eligible for tenure, full-time teaching faculty Child Life Practicum Coordinator and Instructor in Human Development and Family Science in the College of Human Sciences, beginning as soon as August 16, 2022.

This position is located at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, AL.

JOB SUMMARY : Provides information, education, support and guidance to parents, siblings and other family members. Promotes effective coping and play, preparation, education, bereavement support and self-expression activities. Provides emotional support for families and encourages optimum development of children facing a broad range of challenging experiences, particularly those related to healthcare and hospitalization. This position specifically encompasses work in the Emergency Department, Pediatric Unit, Radiology and NICU at a community-based hospital serving both pediatric and adult patients. Oversees student interns and practicum students for the Auburn University Child Life program. This position will also include teaching 1-2 child life related courses per year.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND SKILLS :
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates short- and long-term goals to support the psychosocial and developmental needs of the pediatric and neonatal patients.
  • Works with the multidisciplinary team to provide education to patients and families and to formulate and implement a plan of care.
  • Collaborates with appropriate departments when planning and implementing special activities and events that assist the patient and family with normalizing their hospital experience.
  • Serves as a patient and family advocate through the philosophy of family centered care.
  • Assists with planning, presenting and evaluating in-service education.
  • Acts as a role model throughout the institution regarding age specific competencies.
  • Provides education and supervision of student interns and practicum students for the Child Life Department.
  • Assists with on-boarding, application review and mentoring of new child life interns and practicum students.
  • Instruction of child life courses as assigned.
  • Works well within a multidisciplinary team and independently.
  • Possesses exceptional advocacy skills to work alongside a multidisciplinary team in a community hospital-based setting.

THE DEPARTMENT : The Department of Human Development and Family Science includes nineteen (19) full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty and offers undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degrees in Human Development and Family Science. Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in child life, child development, human development, psychology, or closely related field and completion of a child life internship under the supervision of a certified child life specialist are required at the time employment begins.
  • Certification by the Association of Child Life Professionals Certifying Commission at the time employment begins or ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Current CPR certification at the time employment begins or ability to obtain certification within 60 days of hire.
  • The selected candidate must demonstrate extensive knowledge and skill regarding child and adolescent development and appropriate interventions for children age neonate to young adult. Knowledge and competence in the following is required:
    • Knowledge of family systems theory; knowledge of the developmental effects of stress and trauma on children and interventions to alleviate distress; a working knowledge of medical diagnoses and procedures and their relationship to children’s behavior and development; broad based knowledge regarding the special needs of children with chronic or disabling conditions; knowledge of play activities and therapeutic interventions; and an in depth knowledge of body of research relating to children in health care settings.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills are required to interact with children, families, students and the multidisciplinary health care team.
  • Competence and confidence in utilizing child life skills independently, with limited supervision is required. East Alabama Health’s child life department is small, and comfort practicing independently is essential.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills are required.
  • The successful candidate must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the term of employment.
  • Excellent communication skills are required.
Desired Qualifications

We seek candidates certified by the Association of Child Life Professionals Certifying Commission at the time employment is scheduled to begin. Also desired is current membership in the Association of Child Life Professionals and other professional affiliations and previous experience in the supervision of child life practicum and/or internship students.
