Job Summary
The Auburn University Office of Information Technology ( OIT ) and our Infrastructure Virtualization and Storage ( IVS ) team, is seeking candidates to fill a Senior Linux Systems Engineer position. This position will assess technology trends and issues and define technical solutions to meet OIT’s needs. Additionally, this position will help ensure stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the information systems that support the IVS group’s functions.

Formal AU Title: Specialist, Information Technology (IV/V/VI)
Essential Functions
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
- Installing and configuring new servers (virtual and physical); adding detailed working notes to related tickets in the Service Now platform; maintaining internal wiki pages.
- Installing, configuring, and supporting Fibre Channel Switches and Fabrics for the Storage Area Network.
- Performing preventive maintenance; diagnosing, repairing, or replacing defective or malfunctioning equipment or working with hardware vendors to do the same.
- Preparing and maintaining documentation for performed tasks, procedures and all server changes.
- Staying in compliance with IT related University policies (i.e.: cyber security).
- Regular patching and monitoring of systems availability, backups and restores.
- Handling DNS, Firewall, IP Administration, and SSL / TLS certificates.
- Assisting with support of the Oracle Database and ERP System Groups as it relates to proprietary software on Linux systems.
- Assisting with support of TSM Spectrum Protect Backup Systems.
- Following all protocols regarding handling sensitive and confidential information (e.g., PII ).
- May perform other general and/or related duties as assigned. After-hours and on-call service should be expected.

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution may be considered in lieu of four years of experience when relevant.

Typical starting salaries for Level IV IT jobs are between $55,000 and $66,000.
Level V requires a Bachelor’s degree and four or more years of experience relevant to this role. Typical salaries for new hires are between $64,000 and $76,000.
Level VI requires a Bachelor’s degree and seven or more year of experience relevant to this role. Typical salaries at this level are between $73,000 and $86,000

Minimum Skills and Abilities

- Experience administering Linux, Solaris, or other Unix servers, including shell scripting, patching, managing local firewalls, using logs for troubleshooting, and keeping the OS running.
- Experience administering Fibre Channel Fabrics.
- Experience using virtual environments for and deployment purposes (e.g., VMware VSphere, Oracle VirtualBox, Microsoft Hyper-V).
- Basic understanding of Windows Server operating systems.
- Experience working with Active Directory and LDAP to manage users, groups, group policies and preferences.
- Basic understanding of remote storage protocols (e.g., iSCSI, NFS, SMB, etc.).
- Experience installing and configuring basic computer hardware and peripherals.

- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Management Information Systems or related field.
- In depth experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux or similar Linux Distribution.
- Basic understanding with containerization and RHEL Atomic.
- Experience with Samba configuration and support.
- Experience with TSM Spectrum Protect Backup Software or other similar enterprise backup system.
- Experience using a scripting language to perform administrative tasks: (perl, python, bash).
- Experience with Brocade Fibre Channel Switches, Zoning and Multipathing.
- Basic knowledge with log management and discovery frameworks such as ELK stack (ElasticSearch, Logstash, Kibana), Splunk, Wazuh or similar.
- Experience managing systems configured with SAN storage devices (e.g., setup, diagnosis, and safe replacement of failed parts).
- Experience with one or more automation frameworks such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef or similar.
- Experience with using or administering a relational database system such as MySQL, MSSQL, Oracle or IBM DB2.
- Experience with the following protocols/ports: DNS, HTTP , iSCSI, LDAP, MADP, NTP, RDP, SFTP, SMB, SNMP, SMTP, SSH, SSL, TELNET .
- Experience with VMware. Creating and maintaining virtual machine as a client to the infrastructure.
- Basic knowledge with Likewise/Beyond Trust Active directory bridging services.
- Experience with Azure Public Cloud network.
